Personal care is a hot profession

It is comforting to know that the unemployment rates for hairstylists, barbers and related jobs is considerably lower than that of other occupations. Judy’s grandfather was a barber and her brother was a hairstylist. During downturns in the economy, their incomes dropped but they continued to work when people in other professions were losing jobs. The other related fields in the personal care field may depend more on a good economy, fads or changes in fashion. Related fields include:

image consultants

estheticians

electrologists

manicurists and pedicurists

tattoo artists

personal trainers

massage therapists

Other hot areas in the personal service sector include dog-walking and household services.

Time is something that people seem to be willing to pay for; so hiring someone to clean your home, purchase your gifts, walk your dog, run your errands, and hang your pictures is a possible solution in the life of a busy working family.

Workers in this field need excellent communication skills and an understanding of

customer service. They need to sell their service to a client, but also sell themselves.

People in this profession depend on a high rate of return business and client loyalty.

A different approach to the job

P.J. Wittenberg was a hairdresser for over 12 years. She worked in regular salons and depended on walk-in clients and was bored if her schedule was not fully booked. She opened a salon-on-wheels, working out of her Jeep Cherokee. Her tools now include a cell phone, portable sink and kit bag. P.J. takes her scissors to her clients. Her rates are comparable to most salons. Families like the service—the kids can get a trim while the mom’s colour is setting. She also has corporate clients and she cuts and styles in their offices.
