· HISTORICAL ROOTS OF THE PROFESSION

Veterinary Medicine is an old and honorable profession.Ancient cultures recognized its importance and held animals healers /лекари/ in high esteem. The Babylonians and early Egyptians defined veterinary practice and established codes of behaviu or for veterinarians. Throughout the ages and continuing to the present, veterinarians have made important contributions to science and human welfare. The roots of the veterinary profession are deep. From ancient time people tried to treat domesticated animals. Scientists suppose that the origin of the word "veterinary" is connected with the Latin word "veterina" which means "draught animals" and a veterinarian was a person who took care of the livestock and treated it from diseases.

In Western Europe the first veterinary school was founded in 1762 in France. In Russia the first school was founded in 1733 in Choroshevskoye village not far from Moscow.

Now there are about 50 veterinary faculties and institutes in Russia. Over 250 000 veterinary specialists work in different branches of veterinary medicine.

Every veterinarian can be proud to be a member of this distinguished profession.

Mike Keeling is a South African. He grew up with many animals around him and he always wanted to be a vet. (veterinary surgeon). He trained at the Royel Veterinary College in London for 7 years. Mike talks about one very busy day in his life as a vet.

I get up at 7 o’clock and I don’t get back until late. I also work at weekends. As soon as I get to work the phone starts ringing. People are phoning to make appointments in my diary.

This morning I’m visiting Gray’s farm. My receptionist answers the phone when I am away and helps me in my work.

When I get back to the surgery, the waiting room is very full. If you are a vet. you have to get on with people as well as with animals.

These are my rules.

You should be kind to animals. You should feed your pets correctly, and give them plenty of food and fresh water. You should not leave animals alone when you go on holiday. You should take your pet to the vet. regularly.

1. Why did Mike Keeling want to become a vet?

2. Where did he study?

3. What can you say about his working day?
