INFINITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS

UNIT 1. Wh + (NOUN) + TO-INFINITIVE

Ex.1. Comment on the infinitive phrases and translate the sentences into Russian:

1. I have something so important to tell you that I hardly know how to say it. 2. I'm not quite sure whether to join them or not. 3. When to start is to be decided yet. 4. He hesitated what to say next. 5. I didn't know which book to choose. 6. Tell me who to invite. 7. The question is where to hide it.

We can use infinitives after the following question words:

what who where when whether

Ex.2. Complete the following, using a suitable infinitive phrase:

1. Can you advise me...? 2. I can't make up my mind.... 3. She hesitated.... 4. I am at a loss....5. The trouble is.... 6.... is the first thing to decide. 7. His chief difficulty was.... 8. I didn't know.... 9. Show me.... 10. Nobody could tell....

UNIT 2. COMPLEX OBJECT (OBJECTIVE PREDICATIVE)

Verbs taking a complex object

a) the commonest verbs (transitive) like: advise, allow, ask, beg, cause, command, encourage, expect, forbid, get, hate, help, instruct, invite, mean, order, persuade, prefer, recommend, request, teach, tell, trouble, want, warn, wish:

She encouraged me to try the exam.

She didn't want me to go. (NOT:... that I go)

They don’t allow people to smoke here.

I didn't ask you to pay for the meal.

b) the verbs with causative meaning like let, make, have the infinitive is used without to:

Don't let me forget to phone Jill.

You make me laugh.

I won’t have you speak to me like that!

Ex.5. Translate into English using the construction Complex object:

1. Что сподвигло его переехать на новую квартиру? 2. Мы принудим Джона сделать работу заново. 3. Не смешите меня. 4. Интересно, что заставило его уйти так быстро? 4. Если ты будешь плохо отвечать, это вынудит экзамена­тора задать тебе еще несколько вопросов. 6. Никто не знал, что заставило их изменить планы. 7. Интересно, что его так рассердило? 8. Эта новость сделала меня совсем счастливой. 9. Не заставляйте меня сердиться на вас. 10. Вы ведь не хотите заставить свою дочь выйти замуж за этого человека? 11. Они заставили своего сына пойти в медицинский ин­ститут, хотя он не хотел быть врачом. 12. Я заставлю его выступить на нашей конференции. 13. Никто не может заставить их верить друг другу. 14. Что заставило вас так побледнеть?

c) the verbs of sense perception like hear, see, feel, watch, notice:

I saw her pick up the parcel, open it and take out a book.

Ex.6. Paraphrase the following using complex objects with the infinitive:

Model: She watched how he went. → She watched him go.

1. He heard how one of the other girls in the shop ad­dressed Jane. 2. He felt that the eyes of his fellow-students rested on him. 3. She saw that the door of the sitting-room opened and her mother entered. 4. What I want is that your uncle shouldn’t be left alone. 5. She smiled when she heard how he locked the door loudly. 6. What she wanted was that he would come and see her. 7. Jack watched how Eliza left, then he walked slowly down the hall to his father’s room. 8. I’ve never heard him how he spoke of his life in Canada.

d) the verbs of mental perception like: know, understand, think, believe, consider, find, imagine, suppose, feel = understand) Complex Object is possible but appears to be rather literary and not very common. These verbs are more often used with a that-clause:

I thought him to be an excellent choice → More common: I thought that he was...

We believed her to have taken part in revolutionary activities → … that she had taken part...

These verbs are often separated with the infinitive by adjectives like difficult, important, (im)possible, hard, best, unwise, safe etc.:

You will find her easy to deal with.

I think it best to deny everything. (the formal object “it”)

Remember   The verb to suggest cannot be used with this structure: I suggest that she (should) go home (not: her to go)

Ex.7. Translate the following into English using infinitives as objects to adjectives in sentences with a formal it as object:

1. Мне было трудно сосредоточиться все утро, (to find — diffi­cult). 2. Тебе будет нелегко забыть этот случай, (to find — hard). 3. Мы считали, что ей лучше всего уехать и пожить немного в Лондоне, (to think — best). 4. Он решил, что очень хорошо спать в своей собственной кровати, (to find — good). 5. Он счел странным, что Том пришел, (to think — odd). 6. Я счел возможным задать еще один вопрос, (to think — possible). 7. Он не счел необходимым сказать ему об этом, (to think — necessary). 8. Шум мешал улышать, о чем они говорили, (to make — impossible). 9. Они все почувствовали, что было неразумно уйти, не сказав ни слова, (to feel — unreasonable). 10. Я почувствовал, что было несколько неразумно продолжать разговор на ту же тему, (to feel — unwise). 11. Он не счел необходимым принимать какие-либо меры пре­досторожности. (to feel — necessary). 12. Мне было трудно забыть наш разговор, (to find — hard). 13. Я решил, что с ним нельзя быть откровенным, (to find — impossible). 14. Мне трудно его понять, (to find — hard). 15. Грант счел за лучшее все отрицать, (to think — best). 17. Настроение Хью не позволило мне обратиться к нему просьбой, (to make — impossible).

e). after verbs used with prepositions like: listen to, look for, rely on/upon, wait for etc:

We are waiting for the rain to stop.

I rely on you to come at 7.
