Verbs taking the complex subject

1. All verbs taking Complex object and reportive verbs like to say, to state, to report, to announce, to believe, to suppose, to think, to expect, to understand, to consider etc. in the passive form. All forms of the Infinitive can be used here and always with to. The verb to be may be omitted:

He is known (to be) a famous singer.

She is said to get married with John

He is reported to have died in Africa.

He was made to pay back the money.

She was heard to say that she disagreed.

The verb to suppose is translated as полагается:

He is supposed to do this work = Ему полагается...

After the verb to expect the infinitive refers the action to the future:

They are expected to come on Tuesday.= … они приедут…

Ex.1. Make the sentences passive and translate them into Russian:

Model: They saw him do it. → He was seen to do it.

1. Everybody heard her say that. 2. The neighbours noticed the burglar get into the house. 3. The policeman saw the car disappear in the tunnel. 4. The public made the poet read some more of his poetry. 5. Don't worry. We'll let you go to the match. 6. Tom's father made his son apologize. 7. They made the customer accept their terms. 8. They consider him to be an expert in his sphere. 9. She regards her father a perfect example to follow 10. Everybody knows that this theatre was built by a famous architect. 11. They suspect that the teenager helped them. 12. We expect that they have learnt the truth. 13. It was announced that the pop-group had arrived. 14. It is understood that the partners have come to an agreement. 15. It was reported that the verdict was announced.

2. Verbs like to seem, to appear, to happen, to turn out, to prove in the active voice.

Note: The verbs to seem and to appear can be used with Continuous and Perfect Infinitives, while the verbs to happen, to turn out, to prove - only with the Simple Infinitive:

She seems to be sleeping now. He seemed (to be) happy. I appear to have put on weight. The house appeared (to be) deserted.

Negative sentences: They don't seem to know each other.

Ex.2. Paraphrase the following sentences using the complex subject with the infinitive:

A. 1. It seemed that her dinner party went on too long to her, as it did to you. 2. It seemed that she sensed the purpose of his question. 3. It seemed that he did not notice that I was in outdoor clothes. 4. “It seems that you know a lot of Rob­inson,” Tom Wells observed. 5. It was so wonderful to see old George. It seems he needs a friend.

B. 1. It appeared that George was talking to Mr Smith persuasively. 2. “I don’t think you should blame yourself.” It appeared that the man had not heard. He went on as if in a daze. 3. When she passed by it appeared that they looked at her attentively. 4. It appeared that they were coming down when I left the room. 5. It appeared that he did not see at all why he should explain his disappearance.

to turn out to prove (formal)

The whole village turned out to welcome the princess. He turned out (to be) a smuggler. He proved (to be) a coward. Our wood supply proved (to be) insufficient.

Ex.3. Translate into English:

Ex.4. Make sentences according to the model:

Model: I was in the bank. Two robbers broke in. → I happened to be in the bank, when two robbers broke in.

We were waiting at a bus-stop. Our friend drove past. → We happened (chanced) to be waiting at a bus-stop when our friend drove past.

1. You were there. The incident took place. 2. She was in the bath. The telephone rang. 3. You were watching television. There came a knock on the door. 4. He was sitting in a restaurant. A friend walked in. 5. You were passing by. A passer-by stopped you. 6. They were there. The flying saucer appeared. 7. The sheriff was in the club. A fight started. 8. You were talking about her. She came into the room. 9. An old man was walking past a hospital. He had a heart attack. 10. You were standing outside a hotel. A Rolls-Royce drove up.

Adjectives taking the complex subject

1) likely, unlikely, sure: They are sure to come soon = Определенно / наверняка они скоро...

Note: If the verb to be after these adjectives is present, the action is usually referred to the future:

He is unlikely to share your point of view = Вряд ли он разделит...

The negative: He is not likely to come = unlikely to come.

He is sure not to come.

Ex.5. Paraphrase the following sentences using the complex subject with the infinitive:

1. It was likely that he had hidden my journal under his mattress. 2. It was unlikely that she would come across him by accident. 3. It is quite likely that a motor containing two boys has been noticed. 4. It is unlikely that he will come and see us soon. 5. I think, it is likely Peter will make that mistake.

2) difficult, easy, pleasant, useful, comfortable, hard, safe etc:

She is hard to speak with.

This sofa is very comfortable to sit on.

Ex.7. Note the complex subject with the infinitive and the verb it is used after. Translate the sentences into Russian:

1. He was seen to cross the street and turn round the cor­ner. 2. She was heard to breathe heavily. 3. He was made to eat a Chester cake and was spoken to in a slightly more Edin­burgh way than usual. 4. He is said to be one of the best stu­dents at our faculty. 5. She was reported to have been very faithful to her friends. She knew everybody she wished to know and everybody was pleased to know her. 6. When he recovered he was allowed to ski every Sunday. 7. Her retire­ment was rather a tragedy, she was forced to retire before time. 8. “Miss Brodie is ill,” said Miss Ellen. - “Yes,” said Miss Guant, “she is expected to be absent for another week.” 9. He always appeared to be so helpful on the committees, so considerate. 10. His pockets turned out to contain nothing except a packet of Turkish cigarettes, which he usually smoked. 11. He hap­pened to be her brother-in-law. 12. He proved to be their de­voted friend. 13. He seemed to know her thoughts. 14. Father and Dr Pearson are sure to get into one of their chess games, and when they do that anyone else might just as well not be there. 15. At any moment the boys were likely to be away.
