IBOIT04 San Leonardo di Cutro – Crotone 2015

PROJECT

Place: San Leonardo di Cutro – Crotone (Calabria - Southern Italy)

Number of volunteers: 16 vols. + 2 leaders

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project stems from wanting to revalue a property confiscated to accurately Ndrangheta family Mannolo convicted international drug smuggling. The building remained closed for ten years and rejected by multiple agencies including the Church, was requested and obtained from Crotone WWF volunteers in 2007 for 10 years in the loan. The building now is a CELA (center of legal and environmental education) and became the symbol of the fight against organized crime in the province of Crotone. In 2012 the building has a good restyling thanks to the the work of the IBO volunteers that finished the work outside the CELA creating a picnic area for local people, restored the garden of memory and fixed the damages done to the fences. CELA collaborates with “Libera” too that over a year manages 90 Hectares of land confiscated from the mafia in the neighboring municipality of Isola Caporizzuto for so it is likely that you will carry out the redevelopment works well in above mentioned land. The project supports the work activities above described and training activities ranging from the fight against crime, historical and environmental beauty of this area.

WORK

· Restyling of the Parco della memoria (Memory Park): the volunteers of the primary School of San Leonardo di Cutro realized in the 2010 the Park of the Memory planting 25 trees with signals close to each tree and the picture and story of the 'ndrangheta victims. After few days the signals were broken. The spirit is not to stop repeating the work and using stronger signals. Also this year they continue the work for the park of Memory planting trees that will have the names of the 'ndrangheta victims of the local territory and realizing small wall to fence. Maintenance work for the CELA building.

· Work in the grounds seized to the mafia: in the municipality of Isola Caporizzuto around 90 ha of grounds sized to the powerful Arena family. The volunteers will clean and pick up agricutural products in these grounds

· Throughout the work the volunteers will be followed and taught by volunteers of WWF

FOOD AND BOARD

Breakfast, full lunch, snack and dinner, each volunteer will have a bed in rooms of up to 8 people each room has a bathroom and two showers with hot water plus there are two outdoor showers. The volunteers will prepare the meals by themselves. There is a washing machine. Volunteers must be organized to keep clean the structure.

To the volunteers is required a contribute of 50,00 per week for the food and travel costs. The sheets of the structure are included in the total amount provided washed, dried and folded before leaving otherwise there is a extra cost of € 3.00.

Things to bring: Flashlight, sleeping bag, work gloves, mask for dust. If you play an instrument you may bring it with you.

Documents: European health card, identification cards or passport.

TRAVEL

By car:

From Adriatic Coast: for San Leonardo di Cutro, you take the A14 motorway towards Taranto, exit at Palagiano. From here, continue on Highway 106, following signs for Reggio Calabria and Crotone then. Passed Crotone, continuing on the SS 106 towards Catanzaro. Take exit 2 at San Leonardo di Cutro and follow the signs for Porto Kaleo will find the CELA WWF.

From Tyrrhenian: - To reach San Leonardo di Cutro you take the motorway A1 to Naples.

Then the A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria and exit of Lamezia Terme. From here continue along the highway to Catanzaro to the junction with Highway 106. Continue in the direction of the Croton and take Exit 1 San Leonardo di Cutro and follow the signs for Porto Kaleo will find the CELA WWF.

By train::

From Tyrrhenian: Railways Station of Lamezia Terme, Line Catanzaro-Crotone up to Botricello

From Adriatic Coast: Railways Station of Botricello or Crotone

By plane:

Airport of Sant’Anna in Crotone (18 km) or Lamezia Terme airport.

At least seven days before departure

Telephone us to tell us with what means you will come (train, car, airplane) and above all your time of arrival at the station indicated or at the camp; we will have a way to advise the overseers that can reach you and take you to camp. If at your arrival you do not find anyone, or if the train is late or other reasons, use the telephone number indicated on the info sheet and in case of emergency look at the website www.iboitalia.org.

Place where volunteers will be expected:

Volunteers will be expected at the railway stations of Croton or Botricello and from there accompanied at the project.

By plane: volunteers will be expected to arrive by plane at the airport and accompanied at the project.

The day of departure the volunteers will be accompanied to the train stations and airports.

Some education moments will be dedicated to know better the local problems.

In the free time volunteers could go on the beach by foot (200 mt.).
