Abstract

This paper presents the research one of the most urgent issue of today, which is discussed by European countries today – trafficking of female immigrants in Europe. It tries to assess the amounts and trends of female migration, moreover it draws attention to the human rights which are constantly violated nowadays as migration makes women vulnerable in different ways. The study attempts to identify the mechanisms of trafficking and also coping strategies that helps women to become less vulnerable. The study was done by searching and analyzing the relevant theoretical basis and statistics.

Keywords: Migration, migrant women, trafficking, sexual exploitation, violation of rights.

Introduction

Background of the study

For many women, immigration is a chance to start a new life, a possibility to marry and be avoided of unemployment, especially for women from poor countries. Unfortunately, very often it may mean a step to a terrible life for them and their children. Consequently, if an immigrant woman is unaware of the legal remedies available to her, she also may be involved in an abusive relationships. Human trafficking – is the one of the most serious consequence of unwary female migration. Studies show that the number of women migrants has increased for the past few decades to reach half of total migrants (Anthias, Lazaridis, 2000).

Every day women immigrants, and, as well as children and male immigrants, around the world are stripped of their basic rights and trafficked as sex workers, forced laborers, involuntary servants, or for their organs. The International Labor Organization estimates that human trafficking - fed by poverty and corruption and facilitated by organized crime - victimizes more than 21 million people globally (Geneva ILO News, 2012).

It is not only a problem of the developing or under-developed countries, it is prevalent in developed countries also. There are a lot of victims who were trafficking from different parts of Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Eastern and Central Europe.

We all wish that there would not be place for violence in the civilized world. But the number of cases that are reported every year raise a high alarm. And this is not the complete picture, as most of the cases go unregistered or unnoticed in everyday life. This is a very dangerous trend creeping in our society.

Statement of the Research Problem

A large number of women are migrating every year to the Europe. They migrate for various reasons - earnings, marriage, better life, etc. Regardless of the increasing figure of women migrants, sufficient attention has not been given in the literature to the experience of women migration, some studies done emphasizes on the economic aspect of migration.

Trafficking is the important problem connected with immigration today, which includes exploitation of immigrants and violation of their human rights but which is not covered enough. The political will and the awareness have increased a lot over the past years. Countries have legislation, action plans, and schemes for victim assistance. However, the criminal phenomenon is really rampant and there's no indication of a decrease. It is obvious that this problem is not enough emphasized and very often strategies and actions for prevention which are presented by governmental organizations as well as non-governmental don’t take further development and stay on the “discussion” level.
