- Don’t you know Mary?

- Yes, she’s got shoulder-length straight blond hair. She’s quite tall and slim. She’s got blue eyes.

- How old is she?

- She’s in her early twenties.

- How do you know her?

- Her brother, Tony, is a good friend of mine. Both of them like outdoor sport like skiing and hiking.

- What is she like?

- She’s a very outgoing, sociable sort of person who seemed to know hundreds of people. She’s very cheerful, you know, the sort of person who is always laughing.

- What is her weak feature?

- She can be a bit disorganized. She once lost everybody’s cinema tickets and we all had to pay again!

- Where is your son?

- He’s in the garden with his new girlfriend.

- Is she pretty?

- Oh, yes she is!

- What does she look like?

- She’s tall, slim, fair-haired and long-legged, like all young girls now.

- Do you like her?

- I don’t know her very well.

- So what did you think of David Clark?

- Well, to be honest, I don’t think we should give him the job.

- Really? What makes you say that?

- He seems rather lazy to me.

- What do you mean?

- Well, he hadn’t ironed his suit or cleaned his shoes.

- Hmm. I thought he was very polite.

- Did you? Why’s that?

- Well, didn’t you notice how he shook hands when he stood up to leave?

- Yes, I did. I also noticed that his fingernails were dirty!

L – Lucy

S- Simon

G- Gary

L: What a long day! I’m glad it’s five o’clock!

S: Me too! I couldn’t wait to get out of the office today!

G: Did you see the new secretary today?

L: Yes! It was her first day, wasn’t it?

S: That’s right. I hope she stays longer than the last secretary. She’s very attractive.

L: Attractive?

S: Yes! She’s got lovely blonde hair and big blue eyes.

L: Yes, and a very short skirt! I don’t think she was really dressed for working in the office. She looked like she was going to the party!

G: Perhaps she just wanted to make a good impression. I spoke to her for a while at lunchtime. She seemed rather shy to me.

S: It must be very scary for her, meeting so many people. Especially if they are not very friendly, Lucy!

L: I was very friendly to her! Anyway, I don’t think she’s shy, Gary. She seemed quite outgoing to me. I heard her telling jokes to some of the girls in the office.

S: So, she’s funny, too! I think a sense of humour is very important.

G: So do I. But maybe she was just telling jokes because she was very nervous. I really don’t think she is very self-confident.

L: Well, you seem to think that she is very reserved, but I think you are wrong. Anyone that reserved would have worn something more plain for their fist day in a new job.

S: Oh, Lucy, calm down. Let’s wait until we get to know her a little better, shall we? I’m sure she’s a lovely person.

G: Yes, Lucy. You may even end up being best friends!

- Tell me about Lucy.

- Well, she’s my best friend and she‘s really nice!

- What does she look like?

- She’s usually got blond hair. It’s quite long, well, shoulder-length. It’s quite straight. And sometimes she wears it in a ponytail.

- What do you mean she’s usually got blond hair?

- Well, she sometimes dyes it bright colours – just for a laugh. But not for long.

- Does she? Anything else?

- She’s quite tall and slim and really good-looking. Everyone says she looks like a model!

- Really?

- Yes, she’s got big brown eyes.

- And how old is she?

- She’s eighteen. I’ve known her for ages, we started school together.

- That’s interesting. What kind of things does she like?

- She likes listening to music. She’s always got her Walkman on!

- Has she?

- Yes, all the time.

- And what is she like?

- Oh, she’s got a lovely personality, you know. She’s incredibly cheerful and sociable. Sometimes she seems a bit disorganized, but she’s totally reliable. She’s a really good friend.

- How would you describe Lucy Palmer?

- Well, she’s very helpful in class. And she’s always helping other students. She’s quite popular, and I imagine she must have a lot of friends in and out of school. She always does her homework and always does her best. A nice girl. Her parents must be proud of her.

- Could you describe your daughter in one or two sentences?

- Mm, that’s difficult! Well, we get on well with each other, I think, don’t have many arguments, I suppose. She’s an honest girl, she’d never mislead you, and she seems very happy at home and school – but she can be a bit difficult in the mornings, you know, a bit grumpy! And her room is a complete mess? Apart from that, a lovely daughter!

- Can you briefly describe Lucy, please?

- Yes, she moved in next door about ten years ago, so I know her very well. She’s always smiling and will always do anything to help – she often goes to the shops for me, you know, as a favour. And we sometimes have a chat when she comes home from school; I tell her my problems, she tells me hers, you know…

- Right, Steven, who should we have to play the part of Molly?

- Well, I think we should find someone who fits the book’s description of Molly. She should be quite tall and slim, with long blond hair and a rather long face. Oh, yes, and she should be in her late twenties.

- Hmm … What about Betty Jones?

- Marvellous! She’s perfect, with her gorgeous grey eyes!

- Great! Now, for Steven. Who would be good as the leading man?

- Mm … Well, we need a tall muscular man in his early thirties, preferably with blue eyes and a wide mouth.

- That sounds like John Woods – he’s got short black hair.

- The one with the mole on his cheek?

- That’s him! Yes, you are right. He’s ideal. Okay, we’d better call their agents …

- I say, Bill, I’ve just had a telegram from Ann. She is coming with the 5.30 train. And I’ve got a business appointment at 5. Will you do me a favour and meet her at the station?

- I’ve never seen her. How could I possibly recognize her?

- Oh, it’s quite easy, she is just like her mother.

- Most helpful, I’m sure, but the trouble is I’ve never seen your mother either.

- I’m sorry, I forgot. And I’m afraid I haven’t got any photos of her.

- Try to describe her. What does she look like?

- A tall slender girl of about seventeen with an oval face.

- Hair? Eyes?

- Fair and bobbed hair. Light grey eyes, deep-set, a small straight nose, a big mouth and a pleasant smile.

- I’m sure there will be at least a dozen girls like that at the station.

- I’ve nearly forgotten! There’s a mole as big as a pea on her left cheek.

- That will help me for sure. I promise to be on the platform at 5 sharp in search of a slender girl with a mole on her left cheek.

- Thank you very much.

- Have you seen our new secretary?

- Not yet. Why?

- She is a very pretty girl.

- Is she?

- She is tall, slim and I’d say she has a very good figure. Her long hair is fair. Her eyes are blue. She has a snub nose and full lips.

- What’s her name?

- Grace Walker.

- Is she married? That’s what I would like to find out.

- What kind of person is she?

- She has been working here for about two weeks. They say she is well-qualified for the job, has good manners and very reserved.

- I see. Is John Douglas her chief?

- Exactly. Do you know him?

- He is a friend of mine. We’ve been on friendly terms for about ten years. What do you think of him?

- John is a nice guy. He is very honest and just, well-read and kind. Sometimes he can be a bit stubborn. Nevertheless he is pleasant to deal with.

- He is a handsome man, isn’t he?

- Sure. He is of middle height, neither slim nor stout. His hair is dark. He wears a beard and a moustache. He has large dark eyes and a straight nose.

- Is he married?

- No, he is divorced. He has a son by first marriage.

- Have you seen the boy?

- Of course. His name is Arthur. He is twelve. A very talented boy. He is fond of computer. He is learning to play the guitar and is making a good progress.

- I see.
