Instructions

o 1

Select a topic. Pick a topic that is arguable. Trying to argue that the sky is not blue or that the Earth is flat is ineffective, as these things are fact, not opinion. Whenever possible, select a topic that is relevant and current, as well as one that you truly care about. You will be more effective in arguing your position if you have an interest in the topic.

o 2

Decide which position you want to argue. Do not be wishy washy in your selection, but instead pick one position or the other. It is highly probable that both positions have merit, but to create an effective argumentative speech, you need to select one side and argue it thoroughly.

o 3

Study the topic. Even if you think that you are an expert on the topic, you must do your basic research. Look for evidence, especially statistics, that supports your position.

o 4

Write an attention-getting introduction. Your argument won't convince anyone if nobody is listening. Grab your listeners' attention with an engaging introduction. Quote statistics, site an expert or provide a surprising fact at the beginning of your speech to draw in your listeners.

o 5

Do not assume that your listeners understand the topic. Spend some time explaining the topic clearly so that they understand it.

o 6

State your position clearly and quickly, backing it up with supporting information that you gleaned during your research.

o 7

Conclude your speech with a restatement of the main points. Leave your listeners with no questions. Point out any particularly relevant points once more, reminding listeners a final time why your position is the right one.

How To Develop Arguments

Develop convincing and reasoned arguments that address the proposition and that prove your proposition. Prove that you are right in your ideas about the topic.

Deal With Opposing Arguments

Defend yourself against the main oppositional arguments when you prepare your argumentative speech topics. If the majority of your listeners is against you, then be extra careful how you deal with the opposing arguments. Don't enhance their animosity, don't step on toes! Get your audience to admit your argumentative speech has a point. Here's how:

Sample Argumentative Speech

Introduction

I. Attention getter: Every day at least one American is killed by diabetes and every thirty minutes one American gets some type of diabetes.

II. Link to audience: Odds are everyone in this room has been touched by the effects of diabetes to either a loved one, friend, or acquaintance. If not, the chance that you may in your lifetime grows every minute.

III. Speaker Credibility: My father has type II diabetes and my husband’s best friend almost died from insulin shock. My husband’s nest friend has had the disease since he was a young boy. He is physically fit and watched what he eats, but diabetes skill affects his life everyday.

IV. Claim: In order to prevent diabetes from growing into a larger epidemic, time must be contributed to researching the cause, prevention and possible cure of this disease.

Body

I. Diabetes as a disease.

A. What is diabetes?

1. Low levels of insulin (sugar) run in the blood stream (Smith 6)

2. If the level gets low enough, victims can go into shock, a coma, or possibly die

(Smith 9)

C. Types

1. Type I: Constant blood monitoring must take place throughout the day.

Often shots of insulin must be directly administered via needle or insulin pump.

2. Type II: Monitoring of insulin must take place, but shots rarely have to be

administered.

Transition: With the severity of this disease it has developed into a world wide epidemic

II. Many of the worlds population is affected by diabetes.

A. Statistics

1. 30% of the worlds population has diabetes (Smith 6)

2. 1 in every 20 Americans is diagnosed with diabetes after they turn 30.

B. Detection

1. Doctors monitor young children for changed in insulin levels (Diamond 30)

2. Testing includes a blood sample often by pricking ones finger and putting a

drop on blood on a testing strip.

Transition: With the growing concern of this disease, it is important to work towards a cure or at

least a remedy for those that suffer now and in the future.

III. It is important that our class donation go towards a cure for this disease

A. Modern Advances

1.Imagine having to prick your finger with a needle, or having to administer a shot

into your stomach every day for the rest of your life. These are some of the tasks

a diabetic must do.

2. The insulin pump looks like a beeper and is attached to the person. Throughout

the day it monitors blood sugar and administers the necessary amounts of

insulin (American Diabetic Association 4)

B. The American Diabetic Association

1. Through donations made, those with diabetes are able to afford more easily the

insulin pump, which costs $3000.

2. Many insurance companies do not cover the pump, but it makes the disease

much more bearable (ADA 5)

3. They also run free programs to educate the worlds population about diabetes

and the prevention of the disease.

4. ADA is currently funding scientific research to try to alleviate some of the

issues with diabetes or cure it all together.

Conclusion:

I. Acknowledgement of Opposition: I realize that there are many pressing issues in the world. I have personally seen this take a toll on my family and others. My husband’s friend has to give himself shots while we are out to dinner. His wife constantly carries around apple juice and crackers in case his blood sugar is low. She was the one who woke in the middle of the night to find him in insulin shock and near death. Has she not been there he would not be here with us today.

II: Summary: We never know when or where diabetes will strike. By donating to The American Diabetes Association we may be able to save a life, educate the world, or alleviate the pain of diabetes. This is a worldwide epidemic, our small donation will go a long way.

III. Point of Reflection: When graduation comes about, I want to see all of you there, and healthy. Will diabetes strike you?
