SECRETS TO INTERVIEW SUCCESS
What to do before, during and after an interviews to increase your chances of getting a job offer
INTERVIEW CHECKLIST
Before
Research: Employers are interested in candidates who ask intelligent questions and are ready to engage (включиться) in conversation (беседа) based on what they know about the organization. Learn as much as you can in advance (заранее)—know the company's products and services, profit margin (размер прибыли), management, culture, dress code, and anything else you can think of. Good sources are your career services center, the library, and the Internet.
Practice: Do practice interviews with a career counselor, friends, and family members, or by yourself in front of a mirror. Employers prize communication skills in job candidates, and the interview is your opportunity to showcase your verbal skills, so be prepared.
Be prompt ( расторопный ) and prepared: Arrive 10 minutes early. Bring extra copies of your resume, your list of references (рекомендации), a pen and paper, your list of questions for the interviewer, and samples (примеры) of your work, if applicable (пригодный).
If, for any reason, you cannot make the interview, notify (извещать) the employer as far in advance as possible. Don't be a no-show. The HR/recruiting field is smaller than you think, especially in specialized fields.
During
Act professionally: Dress appropriately (соответствующе) —make sure your clothing is pressed (отглаженный), your shoes are polished, and you are well groomed (ухоженный). Give a firm handshake (твердое рукопожатие). First impressions count!
Converse: Don't have the interview turn into an interrogation (допрос). Answer the interviewer's questions thoroughly but ask questions throughout the process. Remember, the purpose of the interview is for each of you to learn about the other.
Be enthusiastic: A positive attitude (отношение) goes a long way. Let the interviewer know you are a go-getter (энергичный, удачливый, предприимчивый делец) and are excited about the possibility of working for the company.
After
Follow-up: Send a thank-you note to the interviewer(s) within 48 hours. The note can be typed, handwritten, or e-mailed, depending on the organization's culture. Keep the note brief (краткий), but reiterate (повторять) your interest in the position if you are, in fact, interested.
Review the interview process and your performance: Immediately following the interview, jot down (бегло набросать) key components about it. Record the name(s) and title(s) of the person(s) with whom you interviewed and those of anyone you met. Note what the next agreed-upon step will be. List details you want to remember about the job/company. Finally, assess (оценить) your own performance (выступление, поведение) and ways to improve it if necessary.
Evaluate: Determine (определить)if the job is right for you. Did the job description match (подходить) your interests and abilities (способности)? Did the employees seem enthusiastic about their work? Did you like the management style? Did this seem like a good place to work? Did the organization's culture and values (ценности) match your own? Ultimately, a good fit will lead to a more successful and fulfilling career for you.
Prepare
As you research the organization, be sure to note the following:
• Names and job titles of key contacts
• Whether the organization is privately or publicly owned
• Products and/or services
• Year of incorporation (создание)
• Number of employees
• Principal locations and subsidiaries (филиалы, дочерние компании)
• Types of customers
• Key competitors (конкуренты)
• Sales and profit trends
• Possible future ventures (заведения)
Incorporating (включение) your knowledge of the organization into the interview will impress the employer.
Practice
You can never be sure what you will be asked during an interview, but certain questions are likely to arise. Anticipate (предвосхитить) these questions and rehearse (отрепетировать) your responses to them in advance.
When preparing your responses to possible interview questions, avoid giving vague (неопределенный) or unsubstantiated (недоказанный; необоснованный) answers. Always use specific examples, comparisons, and/ or descriptions to support your answer. Practice being positive and confident.
Communicate
Now that you've practiced and prepared yourself for the interview, you can effectively market yourself. This is accomplished both verbally and nonverbally. First, don't be late for the interview! Your choice of outfit (одежда) should be industry appropriate. When you arrive, introduce yourself to the receptionist and give the name of the person with whom you are interviewing. When the interviewer comes out to greet you, offer a firm handshake. After you are escorted to the interview room, stand until offered a seat.
In addition to your attire (наряд) and greeting, the interviewer will be assessing you on the following behaviors:
• Did you make appropriate eye contact?
• Did you remember and correctly pronounce (произносить) her/his name?
• Did you hold your materials in your left hand so you could easily shake with your right?
• Did you talk easily or were you overly formal (официальный) and reserved?
• Did you seem enthusiastic?
