The mosque situated on the south-west side of the Lake Halil-ur Rahman had been built in 1211 by the Ayyubis, one of the muslim Turkish states. According to some sources, in the place of the mosque, Mother Mary Church once stood dating back to 504, during the Byzantine period.

The string of pearls and akantus leaf shaped borders extending on the horizontal bands and the column heads ornamented with akantus leaves found on the upperpart of the square-formed minaret of the mosque reflect the Byzantine period ornamenting style and bring into mind the possibility that the minaret may have previously been the belfry of the Mother Mary Church pertaining to the Byzantine period. In the Arabic inscription that might have been carved later on, upon the northern and western faзades of the minaret, it is written that the mosque had been built by the decree of Melik Esref Muzafferuddin Musa of the Ayyubis in 1211.
The site adjacent to the west side of the Halil-ur Rahman Mosque covered by a single dome is visited as the point where Prophet Abraham is supposed to have fallen down upon and the natural spring here is believed to be healing

Balэklэ Gцl

Is a large pool full of sacred carps filled with the waters of the Callirhoe Pond. According to Muslim tradition, this is where Abraham rebuked King Nimrod and his subjects for having whorshiped idols. For the insult and his refusal to follow the king's practices, Abraham was condemned to be catapult launched from the city's citadel to fall into a pile of burning wood. But God turned the fagots of the pyre into carps and the flames into water, creating the Sacred Pond composed of two pools.

Saэnt Stephen Church

This church had been converted from an old synagogue by Bishop Rabula who died around 435-436 AD. The construction which was called as "the scarlet church" with regard to the abundance of the red coloured marble columns had been replaced by the Grand Mosque around 1170-1175 during the Zangids period and the belfry of the church was utilized as a minaret.
The courtyard walls of Saint Stephen Church, the courtyard doors opening to Yildiz Square and Karanlik Kapi Street, some columns and columns heads in the courtyard of the mosque have managed to reach our day.
