MS06 – Renovating Greenland
Partner
Ammassalik Museum is located in the oldest church of the town. The church is situated beautifully at the harbor, were the population still today depends on the traditional skills of seal hunting and catching fish. East Greenland is the last place in Greenland to be discovered by Europeans in year 1884. Today it is still one of the most remote and deserted areas of the northern hemisphere. The 1000 kilometers costal line at East Greenland only habitats around 3500 people and 1500 dogs (used for pulling sledges during winter). The population has its own oral language without a dictionary.
Work:
The local museum in Ammassalik seeks volunteers to help renovate a historical potato house. The potato house was initially constructed in year 1928 to store potatoes and other vegetables during the seven months without supply ships. Today the house is used to store a traditional boat made of seal skin. The plan is to finish the restoration of the potato house. We will rebuild the potato house out of turf and stone. That way you will get first hand insight in how a traditional arctic winter house is made. Local and professional carpenters will help us in the process.
Requirements:
English at conversational level is necessary. No other skills are necessary, but you need to be willing to get your hands dirty. Of course any skilled labor is appreciated, but you will soon learn the necessary work.
Location & Leisure:
The nature is the absolute best attraction in Greenland. There are beautiful mountains, clear waters and green valleys. During spare time we will walk up some of the nearby mountains. From there you can see the big chunks of ice from the north floating in the Atlantic Ocean. It will also be possible to go fishing, sailing or kayaking. The ice cap with glaciers is never far away by boat. In the afternoon there will be time for a football match with some of the locals. We cannot promise you will meet any polar bears, but bright nights without darkness is guaranteed.
Accommodation:
Bunk beds in college dorm.
Age:
18-30
Travel information:
To go to this part of Greenland you are in for an exciting trip! The first thing you need to do is go to Iceland, then you go by domestic plane to Greenland and then by boat to the museum. This is a step by step travel plan for you guys to follow:
1. Go to Iceland: Take a plan to Keflavik (Reykjavik International Airport) If your flight does not fit the domestic flight (described later) you should arrive in Iceland on the 29th of June.
2. Stay one night in Reykjavik. There are hostels and hotels such Salvation Army, Hotel Metropolitan and Centerhotel Klöpp.
3. On the 30th of June you will go to the domestic airport (you need a cap/ share one!)
4. Take the plane leaving at 10:10 local time the 30th June to Kulusuuk.
5. Meeting point at Kulusuuk Airport.
6. At Kulusuuk your camp leaders will meet you, and you will all go by boat to the museum. The boat is around 100 Euro for a return ticket. The price depends on the number of people in the boat.
7. When you order your plane ticket it is a good idea to buy a “delayed arrival insurance” in case of bad weather. On the way back it is possible to order a helicopter ride! The helicopter costs around 100-200 euro and will take you from the museum to kulusuuk airport. Departure: The trip back is very similar, but the planes leaving from Keflavik suits the arrivals of the domestic plane better. Therefore, depending on where you go from Iceland, you sometimes do not have to stay a night in Reykjavik. You will leave on the 20th of July, and can stay a day or two in the wonderful Reykjavik if it pleases you. Price: The price goes up and down but you should expect the return ticket from Iceland to the museum and back to cost around 750-800 euro including the transportation in Iceland.
But do not let the price scare you away – this is the cheapest way to experience the amazing Greenland! When we have the minimum numbers of volunteers required to carry out the Work Camp, we will write you, and you can buy your plane tickets. If you have any questions please write your leaders Claus Nordahl clausnordahl@gmail.com at and Ida Piper at idahagepip@hotmail.com
Remarks:
No Extra fees! NB – do not buy plane tickets before MS allows it. Otherwise we cannot be responsible for the tickets if cancelled. But do not worry –the is almost 100% going to be! Invite your friends and it will happen!
