Winesburg, Ohio!

SHERWOOD ANDERSON

(1876-1941)

The writer whose prose style, derived from everyday speech, influenced American short story writing between World Wars I and II, Sherwood Andersonmade his name as a leading naturalistic writer with his masterwork, WINESBURG, OHIO (1919), a picture of life in a typical small Midwestern town, as seen through the eyes of its inhabitants.

Sherwood Anderson was born in 1876 in Camden, Ohio. For many years his parents traveled around the country to find a job and Sherwood only periodically attended school. Later he moved by himself to Chicago, Illinois, where he attended night school and worked various jobs including farm laborer, factory hand, and newsboy. He was a successful ad copywriter and served in the Spanish American War (1898-9), during which he fought in Cuba.

Later Sherwood Anderson was a successful businessman with a steady income. He traveled extensively in North America and in Europe – in Paris he met Gertrude Stein, whose work he much admired.

His best works influenced almost every important American writer of the next generation: Hemingway, Faulkner, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald and Saroyan.

Anderson succeeds best in the smaller narrative form of the short story. "Hands" and "Death in the Woods" exemplify many of the characteristics of the masterpieces of Anderson's story-telling art: direct authorial address to the reader; a circular, not linear, narrative structure; plot subordinated to characterization; simple style and vocabulary; and images drawn from elemental aspects of nature. Anderson’s narrators try again and again to tell the "real" story hidden beneath surface events, the story of isolation, fear, and, ultimately, of beauty.

Sherwood Anderson died of peritonitis on 8 March 8 1941, while traveling to Panama. He lies buried at the Round Hill Cemetery in Marion, Smyth County, Virginia. His epitaph reads "Life not death is the greatest adventure". Many of his works are still in print.
