1. Today young people take an active part in the social life of the country. What youth organizations do you know?
Around the world there are hundreds and thousands of youth organizations. There is a group of major youth organizations that have existed for a long time, have large numbers of participants.
Number 1 among them is the World Organization of the Scout Movement, whose mission is to c o ntribute to the education of young people, through a value system, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals (состоялись как личности) and play a constructive role in society. There are more than 28 million Scouts nowadays.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies recognizes that young people can make a significant contribution to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable (['vʌln(ə)rəbl] уязвимый) people within their local communities and globally.
The International Youth Foundation is working in close to 70 countries and territories to improve the conditions and prospects for young people where they live, learn, work, and play.
There are also national youth organizations almost in every country and our country is not an exception.
The Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM) was founded in 2002. Its aims are to promote patriotism and to create conditions for comprehensive development of youth and the civil society in the republic based on patriotic and moral values. The BRSM organizes different activities for young people such as volunteering and charity, camping, sporting events, concerts and competitions.
2) Have you ever joined a youth organization? Why (not)
I am a member of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM). I think social activities are an opportunity for youngsters to meet and interact with other young people, enjoy and learn new skills. Taking part in the activities of youth organizations we become more aware of the community and the surroundings we live in and it helps us cultivate responsibility.
Young people are back bone to the nation. We can change the future of the society with our good and courageous behavior. We always have a choice. We can allow ourselves to do nothing or we can get education or a job and show the older generation that we have intelligence and skills. Show ourselves what we are made of. Nothing can happen, if we do not try. We will not gain our goals or become rich overnight but at least if we make an effort, then we begin our journey to our dreams. And social activities help us learn the skills necessary for that.

* Let’s talk about appearance and character.
1. What kind of appearance appeals to you?
APPEARANCE: The famous Irish writer Oscar Wilde said: “ It is only the shallow people who do not judge by appearances. ” I think appearance always tells us about people’s character. When I see a person for the first time I get some impression of him or her. I can see if a person looks smart and neat, funny or even silly, for example. I can guess what kind of person he is. In my opinion character influences our appearance greatly.
As for me I like tall (not very tall) people with blue (brown) eyes and fair (dark) hair wearing neat clothes which suit them and the occasion. Such appearance appeals to me.
CHARACTER: As English people say beauty is but deep skin which means appearance is deceptive [dɪ'septɪv]. Though some people say the way you look can tell us a lot about your personality, I don’t agree with such an opinion. It often happens that creative people are so busy with their work they just don’t pay attention the way they look. That’s why even fashion follows them and at different fashion shows we can see models wearing careless clothes or having unusual hairstyle.
Sometimes the most successful people are not the ones who were blessed with the best appearances, instead they were extremely good at what they did and were and are people of character.
There’s one more argument to prove my point of view. There are lots of volunteers who help needy families and homeless people. They just can’t always look neat and stylish because of their working conditions. But they are kind-hearted people and they do a great job.
As for me I don’t judge people by appearances. Their deeds and behaviour appeal to me more.
2. What traits of character do you value most of all in people? Why?
Looks are deceptive; it is your personality that takes you places. Technically, personality is a set of qualities that makes an individual. How you behave, how good a person you are, how well you treat others shapes your personality.
If you are active, responsible, ready to help, personality comes naturally. All you need is to believe in what you do, and do it with complete dedication, honesty and love. And that is important for me.
3. You have to write a short article about Belarusian people for a foreign newspaper. How would you describe our people?
Belarusian national character was formed in the course of our history. The country was engulfed (engulf-поглощать) by many military conflicts, World Wars, national liberation revolts, revolutions and repressions. So our extraordinary history cultivated special character traits of our people, the main of them are tolerance and diligence (прилежание, усердие). Traditions of the East and the West exist in close relations in Belarus. So for a long time people of different nationalities and creeds (убеждения) have been living in peace and cons e nt ([kən'sent] согласие) here.
Different from anyone else, Belarusians are able to adapt to any circumstances — not to change the circumstances but to change themselves,to accept these circumstances, to live them naturally, in harmony and even with pleasure.
People turn to Belarusians for help and support, because they know that Belarusians are responsive ([rɪ'spɔn(t)sɪv] отзывчивый) and helpful.
To sum up, I’d like to say Belarusians are kind and hospitable, hard-working and reserved.
As for our young people they are active, relaxed and free. A new Belarusian is rather inclined to intellectual jobs. They earn their living by using brains rather than by digging the soil. The young generation has Belarusian identity ([aɪ'dentətɪ] индивидуальность; отличительная черта). They show more interest in their roots and history.
Every nationality is surrounded by different stereotypes ['sterɪətaɪps]. The republic of Belarus is not an exception though in our everyday lives, we are probably as individual as people of most other countries.
