Will the computers think instead of us?

The word “computer” comes from a Latin word which means “to count”. In fact, a computer is a very special kind of counting machine.

One of the main characteristics of the present-day global “computerization” in the world is the boom in personal computers. A computer is not only a calculating machine, it stores and analyses information. Therefore, the desk computer is expected to function as your personal librarian, control your budget or diet, play several hundreds games, etc. Further development of the computer is believed to lead to a situation in which most of the knowledge accepted by mankind will be stored in computers and made accessible to anyone with a home computer.

Communication between man and computer will not replace man’s creative abilities but will expand them. It is natural that advent of mini computers with extensive memories and possibilities will lead to a new higher level in information culture. The creation of the personal computer industry will allow a lot of problems in culture and education to be solved. Among other things, we shall be able to organize the educational process in the country’s colleges and universities and also in the system of school education on a new basis.

Working out computerized models of teaching materials studied by schoolchildren or students allow us to see the results of this instruction on a display screen, make understanding of the material very simple and make the development of a creative approach in teaching and learning easier and more productive.

As for the information in various branches of knowledge, the application of electronics allows side by side with the traditional printed material to have the contents of the books, magazines and articles fed into the computer memory, where this is analyzed, arranged in a certain order and produced on request as a printed computer programme.

Knowledge is the most valuable wealth of our times. And minicomputers will help to make it accessible to everyone.

Computers led mankind to radical changes in the management of big economic organizations, large plants and farms. Electronics help to conduct fundamental research in nuclear physics, in the development of astronomy and chemistry, medicine and many other sciences.

It is the computerization that brought all people of the world closer together through the Internet. Now we can’t imagine our life without a computer. We can say that a computer is the Eighth Wonder of the world. Life has changed thanks to computerization and there are still more changes to come in the future.
