Computers in Our Life

A computer is a machine that can take information, perform different operations and provide answers. Now we can’t imagine our life without a computer. This wonderful servant of man is more than 60 years old. Owing to its capability to perform all operations at a very high speed a computer has already changed the lives of many people. Wherever the citizen turns, he finds a computer working: at his work, at home, at a shop, at a post-office, etc. In many cases we can hardly suspect that many ordinary things are made with the aid of a computer.

Computers span all aspects of modern life and there are many examples of their use.

Most experts agree that they are essential to solving such global problems as that of demography, climate change, environmental protection, and Public welfare. Computers help to conduct fundamental research in nuclear physics, in the development of astronomy and chemistry, medicine and many other sciences. They have saved millions of hours of work by human hands and minds and tons of paper.

Computers have led mankind to radical changes in the management of big economic organizations, large plants and farms. Physically, different kinds of computer systems range from portable devices such as digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or the systems controlling nuclear power plants. Being applied in all fields of industry at every stage they have made the process of production shorter, more effective and safe.

Computer-aided design is the use of computer technology to aid in the design of a product. Since specific task computers appeared, design engineers can optimize the process of production, reducing the size and cost of the product, or increasing the reliability and performance. Telecommunications systems so as transportation systems from flight to automobiles increasingly use computers in their work. Medical equipment is continuing to advance applying more computers for non-invasive internal inspections.

Knowledge is the most valuable wealth of our time. In our days, it is difficult to imagine education without any use of computers. You can find them in every school. Higher educational institutions have well-equipped computer rooms or even centers. Pupils and students are taught to work with computer and then they use it for search of information instead of visiting a library. Working out computerized models of teaching allows understanding of the material to become very simple and intensifies the development of a creative approach in teaching. Nevertheless, communication between man and computer will not replace man’s creation abilities but will extend them.

Computer reservation systems are now in increasing use. They are also employed by hotels, by companies that rent cars, and by offices that sell tickets to theatres and sport events. The computer not only determines what seats are available at what prices, but it also prints the tickets at the same time.

One of the main characteristics of present-day global computerization in the world is the boom in personal computers. Personal computers are normally operated by one user at a time to perform general purpose tasks. Home computer is expected to function as your personal librarian, to carry out all sorts of computations, to control your budget or diet, play several hundred games, etc.

The United States is not the only country affected by the computer revolution. Computers are popular all over the world. In education, as in business and industry, science and medicine, computers play an important part in almost every type of operation. It is the computerization that brought all people of the world closer together. The future will bring major advances in computer technology and applications, which will aid man in his efforts to improve his world.
