Terms Definitions
food things that people or animals eat
meal an occasion when people sit down to eat food, especially breakfast, lunch or dinner
snack a small meal or amount of food, usually eaten in a hurry
takeaway a restaurant that cooks and sells food that you can take away and eat somewhere else
starter a small amount of food that is served before the main course of a meal
roast cooked with fat in the oven, and is used especially for meat and potatoes
baked cooked in the oven, and is used for bread, cakes and most sweet things, and also fruit or vegetables
heat up make cold food hot
fried cooked in a hot fat or oil
eat out have a meal in a restaurant, not at home
wholemeal made from brown flour
stew meat cooked for a long time in liquid, usually with vegetables
spicy having a strong taste because spices have been used to flavour it
napkin a piece of fabric or paper used at meals for protecting your clothes and cleaning your lips and fingers
captain the leader of a group of people, especially a sports team
fans people who admire smb/smth or enjoy watching or listening to smb/smth very much
coach somebody who trains a person or team in sport
referee the official who controls the game in some sports, such as football, basketball and boxing
circuit a track for cars or motorcycles to race around
court a place where games such as tennis are played
pitch an area of ground specially prepared and marked for playing a game such as football
nutritionist an expert on diet
charity an organization which collects money to help people who are poor, sick, etc.
volunteer somebody who offers or agrees to do something without being forced or paid
orphanage an institution where children without parents live and are looked after
degree a university qualification
extrovert  
friend someone who you know and like
colleague someone who you work with in a job, especially in a profession
classmate someone who is in the same class as you
jealous feeling angry or unhappy because somebody you like or love is showing interest in somebody else
moody bad-tempered or upset, often for no particular reason
bossy always telling people what to do
borrow take money from a person or a bank and agree to pay it back to them at a later time
lend give money to somebody on condition that they pay it back over a period of time
inherit receive money, property, etc. from somebody when they die
check-in The place where you o first when you arrive at an airport, to show your tickets
carriage a separate section of a train for carrying passengers
traffic jam a long line of vehicles on a road that cannot move or that can only move very lowly

apartment a set of rooms rented for living in, usually on ne floor of a building
cottage a small house, especially in the country
patio a flat hard area outside, and usually behind, a house where people can sit
rush hour the time, usually twice a day, when the roads are full of traffic and trains are crowded because people are travelling to or from work
cash machine a machine inside or outside a bank where you can get money
coin a small flat piece of metal used as money
note a piece of paper money
salary money that employees receive for doing their job
tax money that you have to pay to the government so that it can pay for public services
loan money that an organization such as a bank lends and somebody borrows
