Lindental’s greatest creation was the Hell Gate Arch. The roadway carries four railway tracks. It was the heaviest bridge in the world for that time. 52000 pounds per lineal foot is the weight of the structure itself. The latter figure is greater than the combined weights of the Manhattan and Queensboro structures which had previously been the heaviest bridges in the world. The details of the Hell Gate arch are unusual in magnitude. It is an architectural masterpiece. It proved that an arch of steel could be a thing of beauty.
