The aim of the lesson is to teach you to evaluate the author's techniques.

1. PRONUNCIATION DRILL. To every word below you can find an opposing item. Group the words accordingly:

2. What doctor would you see for each of these troubles:

eye disease children's disease skin trouble mental disorder women's disease foot disease bone disease delivery of babies obstetrician podiatrist gynecologist oculist/ ophthalmologist pediatrician psychiatrist dermatologist orthopedic surgeon

 

3. Give equivalents to the following phrases from the chapters:

· to fall prey to smth (p.14)

· to come on the scene (p.14)

· to keep score of smth (p.18)

· to spring the trap (p.29)

4. Translate the phrases given in Russian into idiomatic English and reproduce the sentences:

5. Compose a summary of the chapters beginning with the following:

"The scene of the novel "The Final Diagnosis" is set in a provincial hospital. Interwoven with medical problems and financial difficulties of the hospital are the dreams, passions, rivalries of the staff and the sufferings of those whom illness has imprisoned within its walls as patients..................................

 

6. Hailey's books are peopled with men and women whose private pressures and passions are unfolded against the background of contemporary life palpitating with dynamic rhythm, presented in all its complexity.

 

What means of characterization does the author employ? Does he manage to create true-to-life characters? What is the most vivid personality, in your opinion? Provide quotations.

7. Recollect different types of conflict. Which ones are most significant in the chapters under discussion?

 

8. Comment on O'Donnell's speculations about the complicated nature of hospital life (p.49).

 

9. Is it difficult or easy for you to understand the language of the author? What are the reasons for it? Do you feel you need to read such books or is it a waste of time?
