GEOGRAPHY
The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and China. It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska in the north and the Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the country is about 9.4 million square kilometres. The USA borders on Canada in the North and on Mexico in the South.
STATES OF THE USA
The Declaration of Independence was adopted on the 4th of July, 1766. This document proclaimed the birth of a new independent state – the United States of America.
The USA is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia, a special federal area where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The largest state is Alaska. Each state has its own government and its own capital city.
SCENERY
The USA is a country of great contrasts and similarities. The country is divided into three areas: the Eastern area - a highland, the Central area – a plain, and the Western area which is mountainous.
CLIMATE
The climate of the country varies greatly. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of Alaska is arctic. The climate of the central part is continental. The South has a subtropical climate.
THE PEOPLE
The population is 250 million, of which 81% are white, 12 % African Americans, 2 % Orientals (mainly Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino), 1 % Native Americans and 4 % of other races.
The US is one of the few countries in the world that has no ‘official’ national language. Major languages are American English and Spanish. The bald eagle is the symbol of the USA. The flag is red, blue and white. It is called ‘The Stars and Stripes’. You can see 50 stars and 13 stripes on it.
