2. Oxford University is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the first one to be established in Britain. Its first college, University College, was founded in 1249.
3. The Great Fire in 1666 burnt most of London. A quarter of a million people lost their homes
4. English is spoken as a native language by more than 300 million people. In about 25 countries English has been used as an official language.
5. There are more than twenty bridges over the Thames in London.
6. In 1972 London Bridge was sold to America. It was taken there stone by stone. The British have a modern replacement now.
7. Buckingham Palace is the London residence of the Queen.
8. The tradition of addressing to the nation every Christmas, on (the) 25th (of) Dec. with the speech was first started by King George V, whose message to the Empire was broadcast by wireless. The text of the first speech in 1932 was written by Rudyard Kipling.
9. Shakespeare wrote thirty-six plays. They are still read and acted all over the world.
10. Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain. It has over 2000 years of history to discover. In AD 43 this Celtic town became the first capital in the area.
