Kazakh Leading Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering Hand out English as a foreign language Department of General Intermediate level Humanitarian Training 2 credits Academic year 2012-13 Practical lesson № 24 The 3rd term Lexical theme: “Habits” Grammar: “Reported speech” Assistant professor: Gaiipova Gulipa Abdiraimovna |
Grammar theme: Reported speech
Tenses usually change like this: present→past, will→ would, past simple/present perfect→past perfect
Some modal verbs change: can →could, may →might, must →had to. Other modal verbs stay the same.
Глаголы в Past Simple (did/went/slept и т.д.) можно обычно оставлять неизменными в косвенной
речи, либо употреблять их в Past Perfect (had done/gone/slept):
Прямая: Ann said `I didn’t go to work yesterday.`
Косвенная: Ann said (that) she didn’t go to work the day before.
Ann said (that) she hadn’t gone to work the day before.
Не всегда надо изменять время глагола, когда мы используем его в косвенной речи. Если вы сообщаете о какой-либо ситуации и полагаете, что она еще существует, менять время глагола нет необходимости.
Direct: Mark said `Venice is more beautiful than Rome.`
Reported: Mark said (that) Venice is/was more beautiful than Rome.
(Mark still thinks so.)
Direct: Diana said `I want to be a film star.`
Reported: Diana said (that) she wants/wanted to be a film star.
(Diana still wants to be a film star.)
Direct speech | Reported speech |

Present Continuous `It is raining. | Past Continuous He said (that) it was raining. |
Present Perfect `John has given up smoking. | Past Perfect He said (that) John had given up smoking. |
