Ex. 1. Analyze the forms of the verbs. Translate the sentences.

1. Women were suffering from different symptoms much more often than men.

2. Don’t take this medication if you are breast-feeding a baby.

3. The patient is reading the medicine sheet attentively.

5. The nurse will be making the injection.

6. Ask patients about all medications they are taking and why. Also ask if the patients are using medications as prescribed and if they provide the desired effect.

7. The general trend indicates that cocaine use is increasing more rapidly than that of any other drug.

 

 

Ex. 2. Analyze the functions of Participle I. Translate the sentences.

1. There is a possible relation between drinking water and death rates from cardiovascular disease.

2. The docto must do a placebo-controlled trial with a group of patients having the same disease.

3. The lasting relief of pain was reported in 9 out of 10 patients taking part in the experiment.

4. Men belonging to the first group had higher cholesterol levels than those belonging to the second one.

5. All patients suffering from adverse reactions of the drugs were hospitalized.

 

Ex. 3. Analyze the functions of Participle I. Translate the sentences.

 

1. (While) examining the patient the doctor asked him about his problems.

2. (When) performing the intravenous injections the nurse must read aloud the name of the medicine, its dosage and the indication and then pass it to the doctor.

3. Describing the pathological changes in 5 fatal cases the doctor reported necroses in almost all organs.

4. The patients have no restrictions on food or activity while taking Ranitidine.

5. If a doctor hears abnormal sounds when listening to your lungs with a stethoscope, he or she will order chest X-ray.

6. When at home the patient felt worse.

7. When taking for short term period, this drug is a very effective pain killer.

 

Ex. 4. Look at pictures 1 and using your knowledge of anatomy try to translate the anatomical terms:

the pharynx (throat), the tongue, the esophagus, the swallowing pipe =the lower esophageal sphincter, the stomach, the duodenum, the small intestine the jejunum, the ileum, the liver, the spleen, the gallbladder, the pancreas, the large intestine, the cecum, the colon, the appendix, the rectum, the anuse.

 

Ex. 5. Memorize the words:

digestive system = the alimentary tract – пищеварительная система = кишечный тракт

to digest - переваривать

digestion – пищеварение

the gut, - кишка, первичная кишечная трубка

to remain - оставлять

remnants - остатки

to repair = to restor – ремонтировать. восстанавливать

to expel = to dispose = to throw out – выбрасывать выталкивать

to get rid– избавляться

to replace – заменять, замещать

to grind – молоть, перемалывать. Разжевать

saliva = spit – слюна

to spit (spat, spat)– плеваться

a bit – кусочек, небольшое количество, немного

a bowel movement = the poop - перистальтика

constipation - запор

the abdomen = belly – живот, брюхо

tummy - животик
