Solicitors at Work
Solicitors are to be the first line of communication between the public and the law.
Traditionally solicitors serve the interests of those wishing to buy or sell rights of property. About half of most solicitors income comes from conveyancing - that is from the legal work relating to the buying and selling of houses, flats afid commercial properties.
Apart from conveyancing services solicitors derive another twenty per cent of their income from probate cases. That is, they are able to act in the preparation of wills and later in the submission of the necessary papers to the courts to enable the executors3 (appointed under the will) to obtain a grant of probate and to have the right to act in dealing with the estate of the deceased person.
Other services (advisory, litigious and negotiating with other parties) traditionally can also be regarded as a sours of a solicitor's income, but not a major one.
The first thing that the solisitor must do is to understand the client's problem and to see what steps can and must be taken immediately and in the longer term to protect the client's interest. This requires the display of variety of skills - to listen to the client, to read and understand a set of documents, whether correspondence or contracts. The solisitor must be able to obtain and check the facts of a case, when it is prepared to be Heard in the court.
Medium and small-sized firms of solicitors primarily deal with private clients. There is also a small number of a very large firms mainly congregated in the City of London or in other central London districts. Such firms may have over sixty partners with a total staff of over one thousand. Such firms serve almost exclusively commercial and banking clients. They provide an excellent service employing only the best educated lawyers and make full use of modern technology - computers, word-processors, - facsimile communication devices. They rarely act for individuals and they charge fees for each hour of work done.
