The leading place in the development of the economy of the Altai Republic belongs to agriculture, the basic direction of which is occupied by the animal industries. State and municipal agricultural manufactures, country facilities, and private farmsteads are engaged in the production of agricultural products.

The basic kinds of agricultural production in the republic are dairy and meat cattle breeding, horse breeding, deer and sheep breeding, beekeeping, vegetable growing, and foraging for herbs, cedar nuts.

The industry of the Altai Republic is represented by enterprises of all sizes and subsidiary manufactures on processing wood and agricultural production.

The priority directions for the industry of the Altai Republic are:

- Processing of agricultural production;

- Manufacture of food and industrial goods;

- Providing paid and household services, including tourism;

- Construction of materials for housing, industrial, and welfare purposes;

- Development of national arts and crafts, the sale of raw wood resources to the manufacturers of various kinds of wooden products.
