On October 1, 1946, the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg passed sentence on the chief war criminals of Hilter Germany.
The Tribunal recognized aggression as an international crime. For war crimes, for crimes against peace and humanity it condemned both the organizers, the leaders, and those who executed their orders and were participants in these crimes.
The Tribunal's eight judges, who signed the sentence, were provided with much proof of crimes unprecedented in history which had been committed by nazi war criminals: mass murders of millions of innocent people in concentration death camps.
The sentence passed by the International Military Tribunal declared in part: "The truth is that war crimes were committed on a largescale, never before seen in the history of war. They were committed in all the countries occupied by the German fascists. These crimes were committed under circumstances of cruelly and horror."
The Nuremberg trial was conducted in strict conformity with the generally accepted norms of Criminal Law. It was conducted in an atmosphere of the strictest legality and used the generally accepted methods of proving the guilt of the defendants. All defendants had their own counsels for the defence who were guaranteed every opportunity to study all the prosecution evidence.
