1. Juvenile fire setters between the ages of 13 and 17 are predominately motivated by revenge, and frequently will use accelerants. This group is responsible for over two-thirds of the nation’s vacant building fires. In addition, they set school fires, automobile fires, brush fires, and fires in occupied residential buildings. Juvenile fire setters also are frequently hired by local business people to set fires.
2. Another category is the vanity fire setters. This type lights fires for attention or to be a hero, and usually has a trail of fires behind him. After setting the fire, he usually calls in the alarm, may help in the rescue of trapped victims, and will help the fire fighters in any way he can. The “hero” is full of information including where the fire started, and if questioned carefully, will reveal how it started. This individual should be given time to dig his own grave, because in most cases, he will (discussed further in interviewing).
3. Pyromaniacs, or pathological fire setters set fires for no apparent rational reason. Most pyromaniacs are men. They have severe difficulty relations with another people, and are generally loners. The pyro is motivated by an uncontrollable urge, not premeditation. He rarely uses accelerants such as gasoline. Instead, he uses whatever is on hand in the building he decides to burn. He also sets fires in a consistent pattern – at the same time of day, by the same method, and in similar types of places.
4. In suburban or rural areas, the pyro sets fires on front or near porches of occupied multiple-family homes, and old apartment buildings. The fire is set usually inside the entrance, on the first floor of a public hallway, or on stairs leading down to the basement. The investigator is usually able to tell if a pyromania is at work, by comparing the characteristics of a series of fires.
