Each family in Russia has thier own traditions but in my opinion the most favorite holiday is New Year. The first night in the year, everyone wait it but this wonderful night finish very fast. But we prepare everything long time. People buy new year`s tree and then decorate it with beautiful toys, candles, colourful lights. Adults stand in a que and buy presents for their reletives, children and friends. You can see holiday fairs and of course a symbol of the year everywhere. Everybody cook tasty things and then our tables groan with food. There are everything to you taste: roast chicken, all kinds of drinks, cakes, salads, sandwiches and many others. And then at midnight all members of family sit around the table and wait a miracle moment! And it`s happen, we listen to the presedent`s speech and tnen congratulate each other, exchange presents, watch TV and listen to music! I think it`s fantastic!

I agree with everybody because New Year is my favourite celebration too.

5. What is your idea of an ideal family?

Nowadays there aren`t many ideal families but I would like to tell you about my view on ideal family. I think that family must be rather large, friendly, every woman dreams about it. There are two or three children in it because children in such kinds of family are more outgoing, they would never be selfish and of course they have boys or girls to play with. Woman must work and do her domestic chores, brings up children and husband must helps his wife. At the weekend whole family may go somewhere. They may go to the cinema or to theatre and when the weather is fine they may spent free time out-of-doors. And it goes without saying to go in for sports. There are a lot kinds of sports: tennis, football, volleyball, badminton, hockey, swimming, skiing and many others.

I prefer this kind of family with many children because I am an only child and as for me this model of family is ideal.

Family

1. An average Russian family is usually not very large. A lot of my friends can say: “I’m an only child in my family”. Unfortunately, some of them don’t have both parents.

Almost all families in Russia live either in blocks of flats or detached houses with all modern conveniences: running water, central heating, refuse chute and electricity.

Russian women generally are splendid housekeepers and good mothers to their children. In daytime children are at schools or kindergartens. Adults go to work.

2. Yes, I have. I think everyone must be interested in the history of his family.

I tried to make up my family tree 5 years ago. So I managed to find out a lot of information. My ancestors were from Russia and Ukraine. A lot of my relatives live in Saratov, Ternopol, Rostov-on-the Don and Smolensk.

The most fascinating story is love story of my grandparents. They lived in different towns and got acquainted by chance. My granny graduated the university and was sent to Smolensk to work for a company. One day she was walking along the street with another girl when they saw two young men. One of them wore the suit made of the same material as my granny’s friend dress. My grandpa was the second young man. They got acquainted and decided to meet once again on a birthday party. They met once more, danced and fell in love. They started dating and got married soon. I think it was the case of love at first sight.

As for my parents, they worked for the same company and first met while doing a project. They fell in love and started going out together. They arranged the engagement 2 years later and fixed the day of the wedding. Their wedding wasn’t a great celebration because they decided to go on a honeymoon trip to the Crimea. A year later I was born. A my parents used to pass away sleepless nights because of crying new-born.

4. I think each family has its own traditions. Some naughty children don’t respect them. It takes these youngsters long to understand the value of family traditions.

As for me, I respect my family traditions. I think every well-bred person must be proud of the history of his family. Moreover, traditions help members of one family keep closer. They join different generations together and pass down different beliefs, practices and customs from the past to the present.

There are a lot of traditions in my family. Meeting each New Year together, cooking together on holidays, frying pancakes on “Maslenitsa”, watching the parade on Victory day are among them. But there is one everyday tradition. It’s having tea at 9 p.m. while watching news. Each of us tells what has happened to him during the day. It’s a good way to feel love and support of my family.

5. I think almost everyone dreams of happy family. As far as I’m concerned an ideal family must have some things sharing together. I mean the same dreams and hopes, not only possessions or surname. Secondly, there must be love and trust between members of the family so that you could overcome all your troubles with the help of your relatives. Members of an ideal family must respect one another and enjoy dignity of their personalities. Moreover, to be happy an ideal family must spend their spare time together and develop their knowledge and prospect.

6. Being an optimist I believe that an ideal family of future won’t lose all nowadays system of values and moral principals and will develop the level of knowledge.

7. There are some problems and conflicts that appear between teenagers and their parents because of misunderstanding. These problems are also named “Generation Gap”. There are a lot of reasons for this occurrence. First of all, some parents refuse to understand modern views, ideals and system of values. So children are afraid to tell parents about their private life because they don’t want to argue on this case. Another reason is that parents understand mistakes they’ve made in the past and they want to protect their children. So they make the children work harder. They always grumble, nag at their children when they do badly at school.

So, to bridge the Generation gap both children and parents must be more tolerant, speak frankly to each other and try to come to an agreement.

Student’s life

№1.What makes student’s life different from the life of other young people?

I’m a first-year full-time student of the English faculty and it’s obvious that my life differs a lot from that one of the other young people. I have to cope with the work load of college, to keep pace with my fellow-students, with my curriculum, to get everything down pat or at least to memorize, cram for an examination to get an excellent mark with great pleasure. College life gives us an opportunity to have meals in the canteen, to fool around in breaks, to hold your own student record book and student membership card in your arms, to get a scholarship. Those who have a gap year after leaving school also won’t have an idea of that magnificent system of the teaching staff including lecturers, rectors, vice-rectors, deans, subdeans and the others. But when the examination session comes at the end of term all students keep thinking either “What an avalanche!” or “I wish there weren’t such a thing in the world!” It’s a fabulous experience.

№2.Your typical working day.

My alarm clock goes off. “Why did I keep late hours yesterday” is usually my first waking thought. One can without any doubt call me a night person. It’s of utmost importance to me to awake out of a dream immediately or I’ll definitely fall asleep again. So if I success in it, I have a warm-up, go to the bathroom to clean my teeth, wash my face, comb and brush my hair. Yawning, I go back to the bedroom to make my bed and got dressed. Then I have a substantional breakfast and hurry to the Institute by public transport though I still doze out. After classes on my way home I sometimes read something from my home task as I have a very tight schedule. At home I have a couple of hours to relax. In evenings I often study and then it’s time for me to go to bed. I wind an alarm clock and then sleep like a dog.

№3.What are the activities at the English lesson?

I’m a first-year full-time student of the English faculty. Of course, we don’t write tests, take notes, do our homework orally and in writing, make reports, fool around during breaks and read up for exams the whole time. Though it’s obvious that students’ schedule is very tight we have some spare time to take part in activities at the English language such as conferences. It’s hard to do best in both those events and your studies, but it’s of utmost importance to a future translator to have an active social life to my mind. And one can’t help agreeing that you use your life to the full. It goes without saying that you master your tongue and have a chance to get rid of your mistakes at the shortest possible time.

№4.What does the success in study depend on?

It’s obvious that when a teacher sets a lot of homework oral or in writing, compositions, essays, retellings, poems to learn by heart, reports you can’t help making good progress if you pace with your fellow-students, with your curriculum and answer at seminars. And just the other way round if your teacher absent-mindedly gives a lecture and the indifferently leaves for the canteen before the bell has gone you are likely not to understand a single thing in that subject. To my mind success in study depends on all those features at the same time. I’d like to add that personality is also of utmost importance. You’d be delighted to attend classes when an agreeable, tolerant, likable person teaches you.

№5.Which atmosphere is more preferable at the lesson?

It’s obvious that when a teacher sets a lot of homework oral or in writing, compositions, essays, retellings, poems to learn by heart, reports you can’t help making good progress if you pace with your fellow-students, with your curriculum and answer at seminars. And just the other way round if your teacher absent-mindedly gives a lecture and the indifferently leaves for the canteen before the bell has gone you are likely not to understand a single thing in that subject. To my mind the atmosphere of cooperation is the best. The discipline is kept and at the same time you have a chance to prove yourself. You’d be delighted to attend classes when an agreeable, tolerant, likable person teaches you.

№6.Do marks play any role in the process of studying?

Giving marks offers students an incentive to make good progress. They are eager to get only satisfactory grades so if they are absent they usually have a good excuse of missing class and don’t play truant. Even if a person hard-working, industrious that fair that a teacher won’t give him a pass makes him work hard, do his work, make reports, go over the material again, borrow necessary books from the library, brush up on the latest lectures. Marks are of utmost importance to the students because they give them an opportunity to feel as if they take part in some sort of competition. Finally students want to get five badly so they try desperately to do well.

№7.Have you had any regrets so far about entering this Institute?

I don’t have any regrets so far about entering this Institute. Though it’s difficult to cope with the work load of college, to keep pace with my fellow-students, with my curriculum, to get everything down pat or at least to memorize, cram for an examination to get an excellent mark with great pleasure, to retell grammatical theory, to write tests, take notes, do my homework orally and in writing, make reports and so on. Everybody has a tight schedule. When the teacher fires questions on you while you have no idea what to say you want a long-awaited vacation to come soon badly. But even though for the present I am pressed for time, even though I can have a failure, I have another try and eventually I am through with an examination session I’ll get slightly upset.

№8.Can you imagine an exemplary student?

To my mind an exemplary student must cope with the work load of college, to keep pace with his fellow-students, answer at seminars, make reports, never crib, get everything down pat, work hard, have an active social life, take part in conferences, pass all his exams with excellent marks, take notes at every lecture, do his best to master the tongue and eventually graduate with honours. He must be likable, agreeable person with whom it’s pleasant to deal with. He should often do a good turn to his fellow-students, while ordinary student can be late for classes sometimes and rarely go over the material again.

№9.What do students wear to college?

Students obviously want to be or at least to look diligent, they try disparately to keep them high in teachers’ esteem, so their clothes are not extravagant, bright and too short to seem vulgar. It should be tidy, without any buttons came off, bagged knees and bulged pockets. To my mind students must wear decent clothes to create work environment. Only then they can work hard, make good progress, do well at seminars because they are not distracted from classes.

№10.How long is the college day?

The college day begins at 9. Our classes last for 4 hours with short breaks, but then it’s a midday break that gives you an opportunity to have a meal with your fellow-students in the canteen. In class students answer the teacher’s questions at seminars, take notes, listen to the lecturer, write tests, work with a cassette-recorder and get rid of mistakes in pronunciation to master the language and write down their homework assignment. Before the beginning of a class you sometimes have to clean the blackboard, wet the duster and bring some chalk. After classes you can stay for a little if the monitor wants to break the news. So when you hurry to the bus stop it’s usually 2 or 3 o’clock.

№11.What changes would be necessary to make the life of our University more efficient both for students and the faculty (teaching staff).

To my mind both students and teachers mustn’t be late for classes and lecturers should let the students know beforehand if the latter are writing test in the nearest future. In this way students will have a chance to go over the material again, to brush up on the latest lectures of the subject and teachers won’t have to give unsatisfactory marks. I’d be delighted to have seminars on Stylistics, to take part in conferences, in the activity of Student’ council and several other things which are sometimes of utmost importance to students. I also believe for some of my fellow-students it’d be obviously great to have an opportunity to live in the hostel.

№12.The way you study.

I always go over the material again, brush up on the latest lectures of different subjects. To avoid making the same mistakes in pronunciation I repeat the right phrases and in some way to get rid of them. If I don’t success in it I have another try to memorize it. I read the text several times and try desperately to get it down pat. Finally it takes me half an hour to learn my homework by heart. But sometimes unfortunately I doze out and it goes in one ear and out the other. I draw in my breath and look through my notes in resignation. What an avalanche! Thankfully I have some more time.
