FAMILY RELATIONS

Your father and mother are husband and wife. They are your parents. They have children – boys and girls, the boys are their sons and the girls are their daughters. The girls are the sisters of the boys, who are their brothers. Your father’s and mother’s parents are your grandparents, they are your grandmother and grandfather. They have grandsons and granddaughters. Your father’s and mother’s sisters and brothers are your aunts and uncles and they have nephews and nieces. Their sons and daughters are your cousins. All of them are your relatives or relations.

If you are married, your wife’s (husband’s) relatives are “in-laws”, for instance, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, etc. This relationship lasts all your life, unless you divorce your wife (husband).

ABOUT MY FAMILY

I am Alexander Brown. My name is Alexander, Alex is for short. My surname is Brown. I am eighteen years old. I am the youngest child in the family. I study at the Pedagogical University. I am a first-year student of the Physics and Informatics Faculty. I am interested in computers and information technologies. I am fond of sports, listening to music, watching TV, going to the cinema and dancing. Also I like to spend my spare time with my friends. We usually go for a walk and to the cinema or to the theatre together. Sometimes we ride bicycles, play volleyball or basketball.

And now I’d like to tell about my family. It is rather large. We are a family of five: my grandparents, parents and I. To my mind, we are a good friendly family.

Also I have an elder sister, but she does not live with us. She is already married. She has a small family of her own. There are three of them: my sister, her husband and their child. My sister’s name is Helen. She is three years my senior. My sister is a housewife. Her husband’s name is Peter, he is an engineer. Peter is nearly 25 years old, he is four years older than my sister. They have a little daughter Kate. She is my beloved niece. Kate is one year old but she is funny and curious.

My mother’s name is Natalie, she is about 45 years old. She is a teacher at school. She is an attractive woman with brown hair and dark eyes. She is tall and slim. My mother is a woman of character, well-bred and tactful. She is very good at cooking and she is clever with her hands. My father’s name is Victor, he is 48 years old. My mother is three years his junior. My father is a doctor. He is a broad-shouldered, tall man with fair hair and blue eyes. He is strong both in body and character. He’s generous and full of joy. He can make different things with his own hands. I think I take after my father. I am tall, fair-haired and even-tempered.

My parents have been married for twenty-four years. They are very good and kind people. They always help us and take care of us. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books, films and sports. For example, my father likes horror films and my mother likes “soap operas”. My father is fond of tennis; my mother doesn’t go in for sports. But my parents have the same opinion about my education and upbringing.

As my mother and father have sisters and brothers we have many relatives: aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. Especially I have a lot of relatives on my mother’s side. Though our family is rather large we are all on friendly terms.

My grandparents are very old, they are pensioners. My grandmother and grandfather are of the same age. They have many grandchildren: five grandsons and seven granddaughters. My mother’s parents live with us. I think it is wonderful that they live in our house, because we can learn a lot and we can take care of them. My father’s parents don’t live with us, they live in the country. My grandfather on the father’s side is 78 and his wife, my grandmother, is two years younger than he is. My grandparents are wise and experienced people.

On weekends we are not so busy as on weekdays, and we can relax: visit or receive friends or relations or just go for a walk. I also enjoy quiet Saturday evenings, when all the members of our friendly family are at home and nobody is in a hurry. We can quietly sit in our large and comfortable living-room and talk, joke, discuss our everyday affairs and drink tea with something delicious prepared by grandmother. Also we like to celebrate our birthdays and different holidays together. And of course we have some family traditions. I am sure there isn’t any better place than home. I love my family very much.
