Company Structures
Most companies are made of three groups of people: the shareholders (who provide the capital), the management and the workforce. The management structure of a typical company is the following: at the top of the company hierarchy is the Board of Directors headed by a Chairperson or President. The Board is responsible for policy decisions and for determining the company`s strategy. It will usually appoint a Managing Director or Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who has overall responsibility for the running of the business. Senior managers or company officers head the various corporate departments or functions within the company, which may include the following: Marketing, Public Relations, Information Technology, Personnel or Human Resources, Finance, Production, Research and Development.They implement the strategy and major policies handed down from the top level of the company, tactical plans, and standard operating procedures. They coordinate and supervise the activities of first-line managers who report to them. First-line managers coordinate and supervise the activities of operating employees who are not managers.

Exercise 1. Find the English equivalents of the following words and word groups:

Exercise 2. Can you formulate the rule of forming and using the Present Simple and Present Continuous Tense? Make up two sentences where the Predicate is used in the Present Simple and in the Present Continuous Tense.
Exercise 3. Translate the following sentences into Russian and explain why the Predicate is used in the Present Simple or the Present Continuous Tense:
1. I am an office worker in a large manufacturing company.
2. There are many departments in your company.
3. Chief accountant is responsible for finance.
4. Public Relation manager is in charge of publicity.
5. The Finance manager reports to the Managing Director.
6. Personnel Department manager is responsible for recruitment and training the staff.
7. Marketing manager takes care of product launch.
8. Mr. Norman is in charge of new product development.
9. Mr. Brown works as a Chief Executive Officer in a multinational company.
10. The Managing Director is accountable to the Board of Directors.
11. For the time being we are determining the company`s policy.
12. At the moment all our leading senior staff are attending the Economist Intelligence school.
13. He is establishing useful contacts with our partners.
14. A lot of marketing is being done at present.
15. I was talking to the Vice President of the company when the delegation arrived.
16. We can`t give you a definite answer yet, we are still making up our minds.
Exercise 4. Use the verb in brackets either in Present Simple or Present Continuous. Translate the sentences into Russian.
1. He (work) in Libya on a fixed-term contract.
2. The number of people using Internet (grow).
3. Once a month we (have) a planning meeting.
4. The company (manage) to become a market leader.
5. We (sell) our products at reduced prices.
6. Normally she (call back) straight away.
