Romania Fun Facts

The capital of Romania is Bucharest. Once called the “Paris of the East.” Romania covers 237,500 sq km and the total population is 22.5 million. Apart from Romanian the languages spoken are Hungarian and German.

The Romanian Capital is Bucharest. Its history began in the fifteenth century.

The country is seven hours ahead of the U.S.The climate is temperate and has four seasons. Summer is hot and winter is very cold!

The ancestors of Romanians are the Dacians which were fierce warriors. They were subdued by the Romans under Trajan. It left a footnote in the form of the Latin language.

The communist rule formed after the 2nd World War and lasted 45 years. It ended with a revolution in 1989.

In Romania you can take trains, buses, trams and trolleys for about.33 a journey!

Romanian women are among the most beautiful, stylish, well dressed, educated, loving, and loyal and family oriented women in the world!

The flag is blue-yellow and red.

The religion is split but mostly Orthodoxy.

The second biggest river is the Danube. The first is the Volga. The primary resource is agriculture.

Romania has a republic government. The currency is the “leu”. Previous to World War 1 Transylvania belonged to Hungary.

Oltenia is famous for its embroideries and carpets. Maramures is famous for wooden sculptures. Bucovina is proud of its old traditions.

The Danube Delta is a World Heritage site and the second largest Delta in Europe.

The Dacian fortresses come from the Late Iron Age.

A professor in Bucharest was the first to see nerve cells with a microscope.

Half of the population of Romania died in the Second World War.

In 2000, 100 tonnes of cyanide from a gold mine spilled into rivers and destroyed aquatic life for hundreds of kilometres.

Irish author Bram Stroker based his horror novel Dracula, on the fifteenth century prince Vlad Dracul. The castle still lies in Romania and forms a tourist attraction. Vlad was called the Impaler because he would punish people by impaling them!

If you want to visit the sea you go to the Black Sea. The major port city is Constanta on the Black Sea.

The main mineral resource is oil.

In 1886 Karl of Hohenzollern, a German prince was chosen as Romania’s king. Ferdinand I became the King of Romania in 1914 and his wife Marie was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

During the Second Balkan War, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece and Romania all fought against Bulgaria. What happened to the president in 1989? He was executed!

German craftsmen and merchants known as the Saxons of Transylvania founded the medieval town of Sighisoara.

Churches in Transylvania villages were fortified because of attacks.

 

 

Romania is located in the Southeastern part of Europe, girdling the Black Sea between Ukraine and Bulgaria. It came into being when the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia broke the shackles of Turkish Ottoman suzerainty and merged, in 1859, to form a new land - ‘Romania’. Its name, ‘Romania’ is believed to have been come from Rome or the Roman Empire which represents the origin of the country. Surrounded by Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast and Bulgaria to the south, Romania is home to the striking Carpathian mountain ranges that pass through its heart. One of the recent members of European Union, Romania also surprises its visitors with its striking contrasts such as its significantly developed cities and some which look like directly taken from the past. With its sun-kissed beaches, emerald forests, surrealistic history and medieval monuments, Romania remains a very popular tourist destination of Europe.
