Australia has a prosperous, Western-style market economy, the twelfth largest in the world. An average Australian works one thousand eight hundred and sixteen hours a year in 2005, while the hardest workers are South Koreans who work average year of 2,423 hours. There are six hundred and thirty five vehicles for every one thousand people in Australia, the seventh-highest rate of vehicle ownership in the developed world.
The Australian economy is dominated by its services sector, yet it is the agricultural and mining sectors that account for sixty five per cent of its exports. Rich in natural resources, Australia is a major exporter of agricultural products, particularly grain and wool, and minerals, including various metals, coal, and natural gas. Export commodities include coal, gold, meat, wool, aluminum, uranium, iron ore, wheat, machinery and transport equipment, natural gas. Australia imports computers and office machines, telecommunication equipment and parts, crude oil and petroleum products.
An Australian state government is doing its best to maximize the potential of tourism market. The goal of its ten-year tourism strategy is to attract more visitors from Asia. The state expects tourism to become an $18 billion industry by 2016, an increase of more than seven billion on the current figure. The Australian Tourism Minister says the expected growth will create sixty six thousand new jobs. Australia has the reputation as a state of being a place of events, the leading city for culture and the interest among tourists to Australia is growing.
