B) Using the true and corrected statements make up a summary about the Thanksgiving Day tradition.
5. Make up a dialogue. You want to visit your American friend but do not know what month is the best for your coming. You want to celebrate an American holyday together, so find out the necessary information, to make a decision. Use the model:
- Look, I have not decided on my visit to you yet. I want to choose a month to come.
- Oh, I see. Let’s think. If you come in … you can celebrate …Day with my family.
- Sounds nice! And what do you celebrate then?
- Oh, we celebrate …
- Maybe another month?
- Then you can come in … for …Day! We celebrate … on that day.
- How exciting! I’m looking forward to seeing this holyday with my own eyes!
Translate the tips into good Russian. Practice back translation.
Americans often greet total strangers, especially in small towns. This may be a formal ‘good morning’ or a more casual ‘Hi!’ In any case, answer likewise. If someone asks ‘How are you?’ reply ‘Fine, thanks’ even if you feel bad.
Most Americans don’t eat with a knife and fork. When they don’t eat with their hands they usually eat everything with a fork held in the right hand. Even desserts are eaten with a fork, and a spoon is usually for your coffee.
Guests should be punctual. You should never be late for funerals, weddings or business appointments. And never stay too long! When the host starts looking at his watch, say “Good bye”.
If you go to dinner, it’s customary to bring a small present - flowers, a plant, chocolates or a bottle of wine. Be attentive to flowers – e.g. chrysanthemums are for cemeteries and roses symbolize love!
After you have been introduced to someone, you should say ‘Nice to meet you’ or ‘My pleasure’ and shake hands if you are men. When you say “goodbye”, do not shake hands again. Among friends, it’s common for men to kiss ladies on one or both cheeks. |
7. Team work. Compare the above-given tips with Russian customs of guest-receiving. What is different and what is similar? Create a list of tips of proper behavior for an American and for a Russian.
E.g. “YES” – “Buy a small present if you go to dinner” – “NO” – “Beware of some flowers”
