The cheapest way to stay in Shanghai is to share a flat or rent local accommodation from a Chinese landlord. Classified ads in listings magazines such as City Weekend (www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai) are a good place to start. You will need to register with the local PSB within 24 hours of moving in.

Some hostels and hotels also rent out long-let rooms. Chai Living Residences (; 3366 3209; www.chailiving.com; North Suzhou Rd) is a stylish and recommended option.

Need to Know

Price Ranges

In our listings, we’ve used the following codes to represent the price per night of an en suite double room in high season:

$ less than Y500

$$ Y500–1300

$$$ more than Y1300

Reservations

» Reserve ahead, especially during high season.

» Online agencies CTrip ( 3406 4880, 800-820 6666; http://english.ctrip.com) and eLong (www.elong.com) are handy choices for reservations.

» Lonely Planet (hotels.lonelyplanet.com) Offers bookings.

Checking In & Out

» To check into a hotel, you need your passport and to fill in a registration form (hotels may simply scan your passport instead), a copy of which will be sent to the local Public Security Bureau (PSB; Gong’anju) office.

» A deposit is required at most hotels; this will be paid either with cash or by providing your credit-card details.

» Check-out is usually midday.

Tax

All hotel rooms are subject to a 10% or 15% service charge, but many cheaper hotels don’t bother to charge this.

Restrictions

Frustratingly, some very cheap Chinese hotels still refuse to take foreigners, citing the hassles involved with registration as the reason.
