STYLISTIC MORPHOLOGY

I. CHECK YOURSELF:

1. What are the basic principles of stylistic grammar?

2. What is grammatical transposition? How does it create stylistic effect?

3. Specify the following notions: " marked structures", "unmarked structures", "semi-marked structures". Provide your examples.

4. Dwell upon stylistic use of articles.

5. Can comparative and superlative degrees create stylistic effect?

6. Discuss stylistic potential of pronouns.

8. Give examples of transposition of verbs.

9. Comment on the notion of stylistic opposition.

 

 

II. PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT

Task 1. Study the following sentences and comment on the functions of morphological grammatical categories and parts of speech that perform stylistic function:

Task 2. Identify the cases of the transposition of pronouns.

 

1) We are thus led also to a definition of "time" in physics. (A. Einstein)

Task 3. The grammatical metaphor is the transposition of grammar tenses. Consider the use of grammatical tenses in the following sentences. Transform the first passage into the past tense. Comment on the changes that occur in its mood.

 

1) We arrive at about three o’clock on the Sunday afternoon. It is mid October. The Sun is already low in the sky. The garden is thick with windfalls, apples, pears and plums, over which a cloud of small flies hovers. (M. Lewycka)
