Attributes

OpShACOM Rule will help you to remember the order of attributes before a noun. In real life English people rarely use more than 3 attributes before a noun and, in fact, it is sometimes possible to change their order so that they will not follow the OpShACOM Rule. But why make life difficult for yourself?

OpShACOM =

OPINION + SHAPE + AGE + COLOUR + ORIGIN + MATERIAL

e.g. That evening Isabel was wearing a beautiful long new black Dior dress.

I’m reading a wonderful romantic 18th century English novel.

Objects

Many verbs may be followed by two objects. Generally the indirect object refers to a person and comes first,

e.g. Tim gave his son a camera for Christmas.

Can you pass me the bread?

I’ll lend you some money.

Some of the verbs, which are used like this are:

tell leave lend send read show cost pass give take promise write make bring offer

· The indirect object can also be put after the direct object with a preposition (usually

· to and for). Most often it happens when the direct object is a pronoun, or the indirect object is of special importance, e.g.

I found an unattended bag in the lobby. So I took it to the policeman on duty. Mum bought this ball for me, not for you. Don’t you ever touch it.

When both objects are pronouns, the direct object is put first and the indirect is always preceded by a preposition.

Compare with Russian/Ukrainian,

Russian /Ukrainian English
Дай мне его. = Дай его мне. (Дай мені його. = Дай його мені.) Give it to me.
Покажи их ей. = Покажи ей их. (Покажи їх їй. = Покажи їй їх.) Show them to her.
Купи это ему. = Купи ему это. (Купи це йому. = Купи йому це.) Buy it for him.
