Sponges

After sponges get too old, they can begin to absorb too much makeup. They can also hold bacteria. The economical packs of sponges are meant to be disposable and last for only two uses (once on each side). Better ones like Beauty Blender last longer and can be cleaned. If you’re using sponges that can be washed, wash once a week and discard after a month.

Rinse out the makeup sponge after each use with warm water. Squeeze out excess water. Using a clean cloth, pat the sponge to get rid of excess moisture and let air-dry.

Once a week use a mild shampoo and work lather into the sponge with your fingertips. Rinse well to get all of the soap out of the sponge. Wring out the sponge and pat out any excess water. Let air-dry.

Brushes

Toss a brush if the bristles start to fray or fall out. After each use, wipe with a paper towel or washcloth and do a thorough cleaning, preferably once a week if you wear makeup daily or at least every two weeks. Use a gentle hair shampoo, antibacterial soap or brush cleaner.

Use warm water to rinse the bristles and at an angle so that you don’t ruin the brush by getting water inside the handle.

Apply a small amount of the mild shampoo or other cleaning product.

Gently lather the brush and then rinse under warm water until the water comes out clear and all makeup has been removed. Be sure to rinse out all of the soap.

Gently squeeze the excess water out of the brush.

Lay the brush flat on a clean towel to air dry.

Store upright in a glass container to air out and with enough room for the bristles so that they don’t get squashed or lose form.

Cat Eye. Taking a cue from the past, the eye makeup on the spring/summer fashion runways borrowed from old Hollywood glamour, with cat eyes and retro classic red lips. Makeup artist Kayleen McAdams channeled Sophia Loren and her "sexy Italian eyes" through her Oscar night makeup look for actress Sofia Vergara.

Others had a single wash of color on the lids with liquid liner framing the eye using a fine point or angled brush for a precise line with a small flick at the end. For a unique look, makeup artist Mary Phillips gave actress Jennifer Lopez a double-winged eye for Oscar night.

False eyelashes were added at the outer edge of the eyes for a full, gorgeous take on the winged look.

Flirty Lashes. Each lash is defined and feathery. To achieve the look, curl lashes then using the tip of the mascara wand, stroke mascara onto individual lashes (or in small sections). Take a look at actress Kerry Washington's lovely lashes.

Bold colors. There were some bold eye shadow colors on the runways, like blue as well as neon green, yellow, pink and purple. If this is too much color, use colorful mascara in blue, purple, emerald green and add a tint to lower lashes.

You can also add color with brightly lined eyes in purple or evergreen as seen on actress Viola Davis. Color liner can also be used for those who want to add vivid color, but are not quite ready for the bold eye shadows.

Soft, smoky eyes. The smoky eye is less intense this season. One look is metallics and soft smoky eyes, and lighter shades to achieve the smoked look like brown or navy.

Gold dust. Add a subtle gold sheen to the eyes, with eye shadow or a golden eye shadow primer or top blush with a touch of golden shimmer. Too Faced has an eye shadow primer and face primer to help you get these golden tones.

Defined eyebrows. There were bold eyebrows at the spring/summer shows, but for normal wear, try defined eyebrows, arched and well groomed.

Flushed and contoured cheeks. There were lots of nude or neutral toned blush on contoured cheeks, paired with bold lips or eyes. Place blush on apples of the cheeks add bronzer to contour, or highlight cheekbones in subtle shades of bronze and pink and coral pink for a flushed look and blend upward towards the temples.

Nails. Orange is the new gray. You'll see a lot of tangerine, and also expect a lot of blues, from ocean blue to teal and pastel nail lacquer colors like pink and purple. You'll also see shiny wet looks, nail art and twists on the French manicure.

Do you have a unique nail art design, show it off here.

Luminous skin. Skin will have a dewy, luminous look achieved with foundation mixed with lotion, or skin luminators as highlighter for cheekbones or an all over radiance as seen on Jennifer Lopez at the Oscars.

Lips are creamy or matte. Opaque or matte finish in spring colors especially in pink tones from subtle and romantic to edgy neon and hot pink, plus nudes, coral shades and true reds.

Eye make up

When evening calls for a glamorous look, you want to focus on making your eyes amazing. Here's how to apply eye makeup in only 8 steps.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 10 minutes

Here's How:

Prep your eyes with concealer Concealer can be used to cover up under-eye circles or just the bluish discoloration just under your inner eye. To cover dark undereye circles, apply three dots of concealer under each eye. Start at the inner corner where skin tends to be darkest, then under the pupil and the third on the outer edge. Pat, never rub with your ring finger (this finger tends to have the softest pad) until it disappears.

Apply eye base to your lid Eye base is the secret to keeping your shadow in place for hours. Without properly priming your lid first, your eyeshadow will likely end up a greasy line in your crease.

Follow with eyeliner Dark eyeshadows work great as eyeliners. Wet a slanted brush, then dip in a dark eyeshadow. Line eyes as close to the upper lashes as possible from the inner corner to the outer corner. Follow with liner on bottom eyes, but only line from the middle of the eye out. Smudge the bottom line with a Q-tip or your finger. You don't want a prominent line. For a smokey eye, use a brush to pat in a dark eyeshadow along the upper lid and below the lid. You don't want a stark line, instead you want to blend it so it's "smudge-y."

Apply eyeshadow. It's great to use a three-toned shadow and build from lids to brow (see How to apply eyeshadow). Allowing them to blend into each other like a rainbow is gorgeous, according to celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. Start with a light color that almost matches your lid. Sweep the color across the lid and up to your browbone. Follow with a medium color across your lid only. Build on this with a darker color in the crease. Blend the colors well.

Brighten your eyes with a highlighter This step involves only the inside part of the eye. Putting a bit of your lightest eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eye will brighten it significantly (this is the makeup artist's secret and I use this trick all the time). I usually dab a finger into my lightest eyeshadow and then I press it into the inner corner of my eye where the upper lid meets the bottom lid. This totally makes eyes "pop."

Highlight your brow Take the same light eyeshadow and dab it on your browbone, concentrating on your mid-brow outward. Blend with your finger. I like to use Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Eclat just below my brow and just above it, but a super light shadow will do you.

Curl lashes An eyelash curler will make even long lashes look more gorgeous. For added effect, you can heat the curler under a blowdryer for a couple seconds. Test curler before applying to lashes because you could burn yourself.

Apply mascara Place the wand of your mascara brush at the bottom of lashes and wiggle back and forth. Follow with another few sweeps of the wand. Apply to bottom lashes as well. See How to apply mascara for step-by-step instruction and extra tips.
