The main requirements
For students of extra-mural department
At the end of the 5th semester students have to be able to understand and know the following:
ü Philosophical, general and main notions of lexicology;
ü The etymological layers of the English language;
ü Borrowings’ nature in the English language;
ü The process of assimilation and its types;
ü The morphemic word classification;
ü The word formation processes and their classification;
ü The notion of word and types of words’ meaning;
ü The processes of changes in the word meaning;
ü The notion of the context;
ü The notion of the semantic field and thematic group;
ü The notion of synonyms and antonyms and their classification;
ü The notion of neologisms;
ü The notion of word group and its classification;
ü The notion of grammatical and lexical valency;
ü The notion of the phraseological unit and its classification theories;
ü The peculiar features of regional and social variants of the English language;
ü The notion of lexicography;
ü Different types of dictionaries;
ü The history of English and American lexicography.
Requirements to Students Skills
At the end of the 5th semester students have to be able to perform the following tasks:
ü To explain main philological and lexicological notions;
ü To know the subject and the object of lexicology;
ü To analyze links between lexicology and other philological subjects;
ü To use main lexicological notions;
ü To analyse the morphemic and etymological structure of words;
ü To understand the word formation processes;
ü To identify different types of polysemantic words in the text;
ü To explain changes in words’ meaning;
ü To identify the word grammatical and lexical valency;
ü To identify different types of phraseological units using different classifications;
ü To identify the level of semantic relations in phraseological units;
ü To identify stylistically coloured words in texts;
ü To identify words peculiar of different regional variants of the English language;
ü To use different types of dictionaries.
