1. Never use words AND, BUT in the beginning of an essay. Replace them with HOWEVER, ALSO, FURTHERMORE, NEVERTHELESS etc.

2. Avoid using personal references such as "I" or "In my opinion." It is very easy to say "I feel" or "I think," but this adds little to your essay except a weak argument.

Compare:

I think that society is held together by allowing individuals to live as they which, not by constricting laws.

Society is held together by allowing individuals to live as they which, not by constricting laws.

3. Mind the words and their meanings, you are using in your essay, because not all the synonyms of one word usually mean the same.

4. Watch the sentence length in your essay. They shouldn’t be choppy (very short/poor) as well as they shouldn’t be over-elongated. Find the best length.

5. Avoid emotionalism, try to be more objective.

6. Mind the formality. You shouldn’t be hyper-formal in your writing and on the contrary – too familiar.

7. Try to use “what clauses” and it’s reduced forms in your writing.

Remember some grammar patterns

· What is important is a network of friends –(noun)

· What is important is to have close friends – (to + verb)

· What is important that you have friends – (that clause)

· What we all want is good friends – (noun)

· What we all want is to have good friends (to + verb)

· What this implies is that you should respect your friends (that clause)

8. Use IN ADDITION, AS WELL AS to add information to your ideas. IN ADDITION is commonly used with noun-phrases (e.g. in addition to the economic growth), while AS WELL AS is generally used to connect noun-phrases and adjectives (e.g. as well as more productive). Use MOREOVER and FURTHERMORE to add ideas to previous sentence, to continue your thought.

9. Below you can see a wide list of conversational words and phrases, which can help you to connect your ideas in writing.
