- Yes, their house is even better than ours.

2. - Have you got as many friends at the Institute as your sister?

- Yes, I’ve got even more friends than she has.

 

4. January is much colder than November.

 

Alice is much prettier than her sister.

The mother is much more beautiful than the daughter.

Football is much more popular than handball.

 

5. They are less busy than I am.

 

This book is less dull than that one.

Tennis is less popular than football.

 

6. She is a bright girl, isn’t she? - Yes, she is the brightest girl in her form.

 

Summer is a warm season, isn’t it? – Yes, it’s the warmest season of the year.

February is a short month, isn’t it? – Yes, it’s the shortest month of the year.

My bedroom is comfortable, isn’t it? – Yes, it’s the most comfortable room in my flat.

 

 

Exercise 14. Make comparisons according to pattern 1. Begin your sentence with the words suggested.

1. Basketball is popular in our country. (football)

2. That dress is pretty. (this dress)

3. My room is warm. (your room)

4. I’m thirsty. (Helen)

5. Your essay is good. (Michael’s essay)

6. Her coat is warm. (my coat)

7. Nick is busy today. (John)

8. That book is dull. (this book)

 

Exercise 15. Change the following statements according to pattern 2.

1. This exercise is as easy as the previous one. (almost)

2. Maude is as pretty as her sister. (just)

3. The bedroom is as big as the living-room. (practically)

4. Jack is as tall as his cousin. (nearly)

5. I’ve as many mistakes as Helen has. (almost)

6. Ernest has as little free time as his sister. (practically)

7. I’ve got as much work to do as you have. (just)

8. There’s as much furniture in my room as in yours. (nearly)

 

Exercise 16. Answer the following questions according to pattern 3.

1. Have you got as many friends at the Institute as your sister?

2. Is there as much bread on your plate as on that one?

4. Is his pronunciation as bad as Kate’s?

5. Have you got as much furniture in your bedroom as in your study?

Exercise 17. Join the following sentences according to pattern 4. Begin your sentence with the subject of the second sentence.

1. The University library is large. The Moscow State Public Library is larger.

2. Her sister is pretty. Alice is prettier.

3. Your dictionary is good. Your friend’s dictionary is better.

4. April is cool. March is cooler.

5. Jane’s daughter is beautiful. Her mother is more beautiful.

6. His operas are famous. His songs are more famous.

7. It’s windy in April. It’s more windy in March.

8. Handball is popular. Football is more popular.

9. You’re tired. I’m more tired.

 

Exercise 18. Join the following sentences according to pattern 5. Begin your sentence with the subject of the second sentence.

1. Football is popular. Tennis isn’t so popular.

2. Your flat is comfortable. My flat isn’t so comfortable.

3. This article is useful. That article isn’t so useful.

4. October is rainy. September isn’t so rainy.

5. Your watch is expensive. My watch isn’t so expensive.

 

Exercise 19. Answer the following questions according to the pattern 6. Use the superlative degree of adjectives and the given suggestions.

1. Helen is a fast runner, isn’t she? (in our team)

2. It’s a funny story, isn’t it? (in the book)

3. Jack is a clever boy, isn’t he? (in their family)

4. He’s a good athlete, isn’t he? (in their team)

5. It’s a bad park, isn’t it? (in our town)

6. It’s a difficult exercise, isn’t it? (of the lesson)

7. He’s a popular singer, isn’t he? (in the country)

8. Mary is a talented dancer, isn’t she? (in the company)

9. It’s an exciting novel, isn’t it? (by this author)

 

Exercise 20. Join the following pairs of sentences using the conjunctions as … as. Use the adjective suggested. Make all the necessary changes.

Example: My watch keeps good time. So does Helen’s. (accurate)

My watch is as accurate as Helen’s.

1. Thomas is very clever. So is his friend. (bright)

2. I’m twenty. So is my cousin. (old)

3. My room is 18 metres square. So is my sister-in-law’s. (large)

4. I’m 167 centimetres tall. So is my friend. (tall)

5. My son is fond of noisy games. So is Peter’s son. (noisy)

6. My room has two windows. So has Jim’s. (light)

Exercise 21. Ask questions according to the example. Use the words suggested.
