Sochi Seaport

The assimilation of Sochi Sea cost was pretty difficult to access in the beginning of development. Sea - was the only way to get to the most heavenly place in Russia, in reason that railway track has finished in Novorossiysk.

The project of the port arrival and departure building and close-fitting erection was charge to Academician Alabyan architect studio. Authors of the project set themselves to create maximum conveniences for in-coming and out-coming trips. In the centre there is a main waiting-room. Spacious, poly-colour hall wealthy decorated by the modelling and mirrors, surrounded with comfortable furniture. divans, arm-chairs and tables. Columns of the main lobby decorated with majolica, at the first level floors covered by coloured mosaic. Ticket tills, post, telegraph and other offices also situated here.

There are two open yards with a high colonnade and wealthy mounting sculpture, in the south and north side of sea port.

The architecture suite is stretching along the building from seaside.

The seaport building is crowned by the tower with a five-pointed star in the spiel. Architect glided down tower and 36-meters metallic spiel very peculiarly with a specific building greatness.

Sculpture mounting was charged to Agalov V. I. - well-known architect, Stalin's gratuity prize-winner, professor and his studio. The project of the decorated mounting sculpture first and foremost issued from the main architecture building project. Authors of the decorated sculptures felicitous combined reality and allegory. Sculptures are situated in three tiers on the tower. First tier - on 20 meters height - four allegoric female figure personifying seasons - spring, autumn, summer and winter. Second tier - situated on 26 meters height, portray Four Sides of the World. Four Sides of the World sculptures - 2,5 meters each one and "Four Seasons"- 5 meters each one. The last tier of the decorated sculptures established 35 meters height - Twelfth Dolphins, surround spiel base like flame clappers.

Agalov's students - architects created project of three fountains. In front of seaport building central entrance - big one, and two smaller dimensions inside the covered inner yards. There is a allegoric figure "Navigation" with compass, spy-glass telescope and other emblem's items in centre of the big fountain with a cup -7 meters diameters. Seaport building was finished in 1955. After final seaport building completion, Sochi's mooring line could entertain any types of passenger vessels.

One Russian composer Arkadiy Ostrovskiy was inspired by graceful turrets and created famous song " Steamships seeing off":
"... the turrets of the seaport are leaving
and disappear without trails..."

- it's all about our turrets in the end of mooring line. There is beautiful park of the subtropical plants with a pavilions, summer-houses, fountains and sculptures.

Waterfalls

One of the favorite and traditional routes for the guests of Sochi is visit to some waterfalls, we must admit there is the great number of them around the resort.

In the valley of Agura (this word means "river" or "stream" in Ubykhian) there are waterfalls Agursky. Narrowly compressed the river is blocked up with the boulders. There are a lot of trunks of hornbeams, maples and oaks damaged by the rains and storms. Mountaines are around of this deep gorge.

One might find calcite, quartz and silicon among marble limestone and sandstones. Sometimes they find jasper, basalt and rock crystals brought here by the river and mountain streams.

The Great Agursky waterfall is hidden by the green tunnel of cherry-laurel. Two enormous rocks are cut and corroded by the water. Long whimsical branches of cherry-laurel, box-trees, oaks trail above those rocks. This magnificent sight is completed by grey mane of moss, lichen and abundant brushwood of fern. Wide torrent of water crashes down from 30-meter height. Its streams strike the ledges, divide into separate rivulets, small splashes and the smallest water spray, and then fall into the oval lake. The tight circle of boulders is around that lake. Agura looks like a snake dodging through the conglomeration of stones and pebbles.

The water in that lake is cool and transparent enough to see stones at the bottom. The depth of the lake reaches 6-7 meters in the centre.

The majestic sight of calm water contrasts much with fierce spring stream full of rain and melted snow water. At that time the stream is so strong that easily can destroy everything on its way, carrying away big stones and trunks of wood giants.

500 meters away from the first waterfall you may find the next one. It is also very beautiful. There is a karsts cave and stone path above the waterfall. Behind the second there is the third 6-meter waterfall in the narrow cleft. You may hardly see but easily listen to that waterfall.

It doesn't take a lot of time to walk around Agursky waterfalls. But the pleasure of enjoying them is much more recompensing.

Zmeykovsky waterfalls are also very beautiful. They situated on the river Zmeyka -the right tributary of Matsesta. The cascade of 7 waterfalls is spread along 1 kilometer of Zmeyka's current. The most attractive and highest waterfalls are two lower of them having 10 meters of height.

If you go from Cherkessian pass (1836 meters above the sea level), you may easily come to the foot of vertical walls of Fischt hill. There is the highest waterfall of Russia - Pshekhsky. That waterfall consists of two streams. The aggregate height of 2-cascade one is 200 meters. The place is set in the frame of rocky bastions looking like a palace of fairy-tale giant or Sun Gate. The gate is oriented exactly to the East. The first rays of light come through the great gate making the opalescent halo in the water dust. This miracle is unforgettable. The water of this waterfall runs to the river Belaya and then feeds Krasnodar storage pool.

Another natural marvel is situated on Jegosh stream - 33 waterfalls. The length of stream is 2 kilometers including the drying up part. 500 meters of the stream present a plenty of waterfalls, rapids and pitch slopes. There are some 33 waterfalls, 7 pitch slopes and 13 rapids. The highest waterfall has 10 meters of height. The plenty of box-trees and other rare greenery create the picturesqueness of the view.
