Extract 1
05:10 - I was walking along a road with two friends. The sun set. I felt a tinge of melancholy. Suddenly, the sky became a bloody red. I stopped, leaned against a railing, dead tired, and I looked at the flaming clouds that hung like blood and a sword over the blue-black fjord and the city. My friends walked on. I stood there trembling with fright, and I felt a loud, unending scream piercing nature.
In re-creating that feeling, Munch places it at the very spot where he experienced it. The landscape behind the figure is not at all imaginary; it’s the actual site in Oslo, then known as Kristiania, where that terrible feeling overtook him. In fact, the background landscape is loaded with meaning. For one thing, this is a famous spot in Oslo, the traditional vantage point for artists to portray the city.
Extract 2
17:58 - “It’s expressionistic because it wants to express this pain and anguish which is behind the surface. An impressionist picture would have allowed the mystery to remain in the depths of the canvass, behind the clouds. An expressionist picture has to force the pain and anguish out into the external world.”
“He developed this wonderful, anti-naturalistic aesthetic and used that expressively to state psychic moods. And of course The Scream is the absolute epitome of that kind of project.”
