The Study at the University
1. I am a third-year student of Moscow Aviation University (MAI) (branch in Serpukhov).
2. The head of the University is Nazarenko A.V.
3. There are a lot of faculties in the University.
4. I study at the faculty of System Programming.
5. The head of the faculty is Boronin V.A.
6. The academic year is divided into two terms.
7. At the end of each term we have exams.
8. Twice a year the students have vacations.
9. The first- and the second-year students study general engineering subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, technical drawing.
10. Then the students begin to study specialized subjects.
11. We have a good library, laboratories and a computer center.
12. I like to study at the University because I hope to get a good education and to become a highly-skilled system programmer.
13. I think education is the way to success.
Computers
1. We can`t imagine our life without computers.
2. Computers are fast and powerful.
3. They can perform different functions.
4. There are four main classes of computers: microcomputers, minicomputers, mainframes 1 and supercomputers.
5. A minicomputer is produced on one plate composed of chips.
6. Most microcomputers are personal and small business computers.
7. They are used for the production of office documents, letters, contracts etc.
8. Supercomputers are designed for calculating the trajectories of spaceships and for controlling the flight of rockets.
9. They are widely used for regulating the speed of trains in the Moscow Metro.
10. More trains per hour can run thanks to this system.
11. Medical engineers design more and more electronic computers to help people.

The Public Transport of the Future
1. The public transport of the future must be more efficient and quicker.
2. One of those vehicles is an electric car.
3. With this car we will move using an automatic guidance system.
4. The car will do all the work for a driver.
5. A small computer will monitor the exhaust.
6. The electronic device will calculate how much fuel there is in the tank.
7. Radar may control the brakes.
8. A display screen may show the car`s position on the road.
9. A computer will detect all dangers.
10. The most important data will be projected on the wind screen.
11. A navigation Earth satellite will indicate the route.
12. The engine won`t use a cooling system, because its parts are made of ceramic materials.
13. They withstand temperatures up to 1000o C.
Television
1. The first TV set was first demonstrated in 1939 in New York.
2. A lot of people were interested in it.
3. Electronic factories started the TV production.
4. In 1958 there were millions of them.
5. Now people can watch rocket-launching, concerts and football and tennis matches as they occur.
6. At present TV communication is provided with earth satellites.
7. Nowadays many countries also have cable TV.
8. It means transmitting TV signals to mountain areas far from big cities.
9. Colour television has replaced black-and-white television.
10. The next major advance for TV is digital television.
11. A digital TV set automatically switches on the desired channel at the right time.
12. A digital TV set hangs on the wall like a picture.
13. The new and the most important stage in the development of television is high-definition television (HDTV) or Hi –Vision.
14. This is the much higher resolution television of the 21st century.
Electricity
1. It is impossible to imagine our civilization without electricity.
2. Electrical power has become universal: lighting, electrochemistry, electrometallurgy.
3. Electric devices have become a part of our everyday life.
4. The first electric motor appeared in the 19th century.
5. The generator – a new compact source of electricity – was also developed.
6. Thomas Edison developed the electric lamp.
7. Then the transformer was invented.
8. The first electric lines were set up.
9. The consumption of electricity has doubled every ten years.
10. Electricity has replaced other sources of energy.
11. It offers improved service and reduced cost.
12. The advantages of electricity are: it is clean, easily regulated and generates no by-products.
Laser
1. The name “Laser” stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
2. Laser beam can vaporize the hardest and most heat-resistant materials.
3. Laser and thermonuclear reaction - two big technological discoveries of the 20th century – produce a practically limitless source of energy.
4. The light capacity of a laser can be dozens of times greater than the capacity of all the world`s power plants.
5. There are a lot of applications of laser in industry and science.
6. Laser is successfully used in communication.
7. One laser beam can carry the radio, TV and telephone messages of the world simultaneously.
8. In a fraction of a second one laser beam can transmit the entire text of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
9. Lasers can be used for transmission of energy to space stations or to planets in the Solar system.
10. They also can transmit the solar radiation to the Earth or to other space bodies.
A new era of aircraft
1. A 21st century hypersonic aircraft may open a new age of aircraft design.
2. The new liner has an elongated fuselage with a sharp nose.
3. This plane can fly at a speed six times above the speed of sound.
4. It will cover the distance between Tokyo and Moscow in two hours.
5. The diameter of the fuselage will be 4 meters and the length 100 meters, with the cabin accommodating 300 passengers.
6. The superplanes will have no windows, but the passengers can watch the panorama of the Earth on the TV monitor.
7. Airliners` routes will lie in the stratosphere.
8. This hypersonic craft will use liquid hydrogen as a coolant and propellant.
9. The new ventilator propeller engines will be mounted in such planes.
