It’s easily noticed that characters in the film speak in different ways. There are a lot of colloquial and “jargon” words, typically used by children. The effect of informality of style is achieved also by the frequent use of phrasal verbs. These words and expressions are in contrast with “normal”, literary vocabulary, used by the Callaways.

 

Exercise 1

 

Study the list of words and expressions below and divide them into three groups: a) formal- Fabulous, detain, Consolation, Distracted, entanglements

b) informal- phoney-baloney, to work somebody to the bone, pigsty, brainless, jock, regaling, penguin guy, nincompoops, goody-goody

c) neutral- Log, To settle sb in, Entice, Filthy, Gang, flyball.

Complete the sentences with the appropriate word or phrase from the list. Change the form of the words or add some words if necessary

 

Collect kids, a reject, to get an interview, judge a book by the cover, father’s sense of humor, butler, to get cleaned up, to drive somebody mental, to work somebody to the bone, to consent.
