a well drilled as part of an appraisal
drilling program
Appraisal drilling
drilling carried out to determine the physical
extent, reserves and likely production
rate of a field
Purging
cleansing of processing equipment, or
pipelines Vessels must be purged of
noxious gases by sweeping them with air
before removing manways or entering
them for cleaning or inspection Pipelines
must be purged of material, e g water,
before they are placed into service to
carry crude oil or natural gas
Paleozoic era
the era of geological time (comprising the
Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian,
Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian
Periods) which began roughly 600 million
years ago and ended roughly 230 million
years ago
Vapor
substance in a gaseous state
Paraxylene
an aromatic compound used in the manufacture
of polyester fibers
Wax
solid hydrocarbon which is present in some
crude oils, especially in paraffinic crudes
Wax deposits in pipelines and equipment
can cause mechanical problems
Paraffin
a name given in the UK to the premium
grade of kerosene burned in lamps and
flueless space heaters, a member of the
paraffin (alkane) series of hydrocarbons
Paraffins
the simplest homologous series of
hydrocarbons, containing no unsaturated
carbon-to-carbon bonds, also known as
the alkanes
Conventurer
a person or company joined with others
in a particular venture, see consortium
Foam
a mass of stabilized bubbles in a liquid,
e g crude oil, believed to be caused by
high surface tension or the presence of
finely divided solid particles Foam can
be a nuisance in processing and may be
suppressed by chemical means using
anti-foam agents
Pentane
the saturated hydrocarbon (alkane) with
five carbon atoms in its molecule (C5H12)
the fifth member of the paraffin series - a
liquid under normal conditions
Transhipment
transfer of a cargo from one ship (or
means of transport) to another
Traveling block
the moving pulley system used in conjunction
with the (fixed) crown block for
raising and lowering the drill string,
casing, etc
Agitators
mixing devices used to bring about intimate
contact between liquids or solutions
of dissolved solids or to keep solids suspended
in liquids
Pressure drop
the decrease in pressure due to energy
losses, such as friction which occurs
when a liquid or gas passes through a
pipe, vessel or other piece of equipment
By-pass
a pipe connected around a valve or
other control mechanism in a flow line in
order to maintain flow during adjustments
or repair
