The most serious error1made by many candidates is writing their employment history as if it were a conversation or a story, using "I"- statements. Don't forget that your resume is a formal document, and if you want to write your history in its most basic form, it should follow the principle of "problem — solution2— results". Use active verbs such as "managed3", "provided4","directed", "coordinated", "accomplished", "maintained5", "encouraged6", "increased7", "conducted8", "participated9", etc. It's better to write: "Managed client meetings, coordinated appointments10,maintained scheduling11 and "paperwork" instead of: "/ was responsible for phones, client meetings, appointments, scheduling, and paperwork." Experience is important for a chronological resume. Focus on your accomplishments and show results. Exclude positions you had for less than four months. Round off dates to years (2001—2003 instead of 6/2001—3/2003). Experience is optional in a functional resume. Here you may mention only dates, job titles, and company names and locations. List your work experience position by position in reverse chronological order. 1.a mistake that causes problems 2. a way of solving a problem 3. controlled a process 4. made something available for use 5. made a process continue at the same level or standard 6. gave somebody support, courage or hope 7. made something greater in amount or number 8. organised an activity 9. took part in an activity 10.a formal meeting or visiting somebody 11.a plan that lists all the work that you have to do

b) active verbs as "managed", "coordinated" (e.g. managed office operations)

a) 1991-1993; 1993-1997; 1997-2002

b) 1997-2002; 1993-1997; 1991-1993

c) both are correct

15. Rearrange this "story" for

(A) a functional resume (B) a chronological resume

From 2000 until present I have worked for "Philip Wilson Publisher Ltd" holding the position of Secretary to the Production Manager. I was responsible for paperwork, telephone calls and client appointments. I was successful in performing my responsibilities, because I was effective in coordinating and managing. From 1997 until 20011 worked as a Shop-assistant, selling clothes at "Cotton Market Ltd". The management was proud of me because I increased sales by 25%.

Education

Give your education first if it has the greatest importance for the position you are applying for, or if it is the most recent1accomplishment in your career. Your employer is more interested in the information which is most current2 and that information which shows your level3of suitability for the position, so, if you had any positions before, list them first. If you are a candidate with more than two years of experience, list only degree4,school, location, and date. If you are a recent college or university graduate5,emphasize your strengths: awards6and honours7,courses, studies, extracurricular8activities and educational programmes you took part in. 1.that happened only a short time ago 2. happening now 3. a standard or quality 4. the qualification of students who successfully finish a university or college course 5. a person who has a university degree 6. prizes such as money 7. awards or official titles 8. not part of the usual course of work or studies at a school or college

16. Mark the following statements as true (T) or false (F). Correct the false ones.

A. Your education should come before your experience even if it's not so important for the position you want to get.

B. Your education should come before your experience if you've already worked after graduating.

C. Even if you have more than two years of work experience, you should mention all your awards and honours.

D. If you've just graduated, emphasize all your educational strengths.

E. The reader is mostly interested in the most current information.
