EXPLANATORY NOTE
Curriculum of the discipline“Great Game in Chinese Central Asia” is an elective course designed for the students of the speciality ‘International relations’. It reflects modern academic achievements in the discussed area. The targeted audience of the course is students of the specialty ‘International relations’. The course addresses a set of questions relating to the history of international relations in Chinese Centrall Asia in modern time, primarily competition between great powers – Russia and Britain, in western China. Curriculum of the course conatins a syllabus, description of lectures, seminars, individual work of students, assignements and other materials.

The course “Great Game in Chinese Central Asia” is an elective discipline of the profile cycle designed for the 3rd year students majoring in International relations. This discipline corresponds to the State Cumpulsory Standard of Education on preparation of specialists in the field of international relations and regional studies.
The aim of the teching discipline is to examine a complex history of international relations in Chinese Central Asia during the end of the first half od the XX centuries, mainly struggle between great powers – the Russian and British Empires, for political and economic domination in this region.
The main tasks of the course is to provide students with knowledge on how rivalry and struggle between great powers – the Russian and British Empires, for political and economic domination in Chinese Central Asia during the end of the XIX – first half of the XX centuries determined political development of the region embracing it into the orbit of the international relations, own interests of the powers and into the process of modernization.
By the end of the course students should
- know the structure of the discipline and its purpose and role in professional activity;
- possess categorical apparatus relating to the discipline;
- know main events and trends in international relations;
- know political interest of the Russian Empire in Central Asia and its role in the life of westernmost province of China – Xinnjiang;
- know political interest of the British Empire in Central Asia and level of its involvement in the ‘great game’;
- be able to analyze Russian-British and Russian-Chinese relations of the late XIX – early XX centuries in Central Asia;
Prerequisites: Modern history of Asia and Africa; Modern History of international relations
Postrequisites: All-sided diplomacy, writing diploma work
