National Emblems of the UK

The national flag of the UK is called Union Jack. It combines the St. George’s cross of England, St. Andrew’s cross of Scotland and St. Patrick’s cross of Ireland. “ Union” symbolizes the union of England and Scotland in 1606, “Jack” refers to King James I who united Scotland and England.

One can see two animals on the national “coat of arms” - the lion which is the symbol of national strength and of the British monarchy and the unicorn(a mythical animal) the symbol of purity. The national anthem is “God save the Queen”.

Every country of the UK has its national emblem and saint patron.

England The red rose, which was the emblem of England since the War of Roses when the Lancastrians got the English throne.(red rose was their emblem). St.patron is St George. St. George’s Day is celebrated on 23. April

Scotland The thistle. It saved the country from the Northmen’s invasion, when one of them stepped on its needle and cried of pain waking the Scots. St. patron is St. Andrew, one of 12 apostles of Jesus Christ.

Wales The daffodil, which flowers on March 1, St. David’s Day (St. David is st. patron of Wales) and the leek ( he ate leek living in the forest).

Northern Ireland The shamrock, which is an illustration of the doctrine of Trinity. St. Patrick is st. patron of Ireland. His Day is 17 March.
