Leg01 Monte Barro, Galbiate (LC) Parco regionale del Monte Barro 26/5– 8/6 ENVI

Location: Galbiate, Lecco district, Lombardia region, North of Italy – Monte Barro Regional Park

Project: Monte Barro is a really interesting little mountain, placed in a hilly area between Milan and Lecco. In such a small area (665 ha), volunteers will find a high variety of landscapes and biodiversity, matching with history and culture. From their accommodation on the top of the mountain, volunteers will have the chance to admire the beautiful landscape offered by the pre-Alps chain and Como Lake. The volunteers will also have the possibility to visit the archaeological site, the bird-watching point and the ethnographic museum located inside the Monte Barro Park, while having relaxing walks. Legambiente has been collaborating for years with the Park for the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity.

Work: Thevolunteers will be manually removing weeds on the top of the mountain to encourage the breeding of rare flowerswhich makes the Park an exaordinary natural botanical garden.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in a guesthouse provided with beds, toilet and showers, and a well-equipped kitchen.

Language: English will be the official language in the camp

CPI01-LO SPIRITO DEL PIANETA

BACKGROUND: Lo Spirito del Pianeta is an international festival of indigenous and tribal groups, where groups from all over the world introduce themselves through performances (dances, songs, rites, conferences, workshops), interacting with the festival visitors in order to make themselves better known and understood. This Festival was created to give a firsthand account of people who daily live through their culture and share it with others, to erase the stereotypes that often do not reflect reality, through the movement of the dances, prayers, spirituality of each of these people and ethnic groups. Promote and facilitate the meeting, mutual understanding and brotherhood of people help to learn, enhance, preserve tribal cultures, support groups or tribal peoples in the protection and preservation of environmental and economic conditions, are necessary to ensure their survival, the maintenance and use their own traditions: these are the fundamental goals of our work. The festival also includes a fair with about 100 stands where crafts are sold to the festival visitors. Various activities for children and adults are organized on the festival grounds. There is an Italian restaurant, a vegetarian and an Ethiopic restaurant, a Doner-Kebab-stor. Each night a different indigenous and tribal group performs its traditional arts. Last year’s edition had over 130.000 visitors. The aim of the festival is to make everyone understand that, even if we may look differently and come from different parts of the world, we are all humans of one kind. Another important objective is to reveal problems and history that might be unknown to many of us and, try to support people who is in need if they have a project that could improve their lives on their original territory, while preserving their traditions. WORK: International volunteers will be part of a bigger team of volunteers helping set up and run the festival. International volunteers will help building and disassembling the facilities of the festival. Typical activities during the festival include cleaning the area and helping with the differentiate waste collection, however the past years volunteers have been involved in a number of different activities, according to the festival needs. Volunteers will work for around 6/7 hours a day and will work in pairs or small groups at different times of the day depending on the work requirements. Please note that flexibility and adaptability are required, and there might be some heavy work involved from time to time. The festival volunteers are lovely people they enjoy helping and don't mind working under the sun. Hopefully international volunteers will be wonderful members of this team! International volunteers will have 2 free days, to be arranged with the festival organisers.

ACCOMMODATION: The volunteers will sleep in shared tents at the Festival area. Toilet and washing facilities will be available, camp beds will be provided but you must bring a sleeping bag and towels. Please make sure you are comfortable with basic camping conditions! Breakfast, lunch and dinner plus bottled drinking water will be provided by the organiser at the main festival restaurant. Any extra is at the volunteers’ charge.

LOCATION: Chiuduno is a village located near Bergamo, in the north of Italy (Lombardy region).

TERMINAL: The nearest airport is Caravaggio International Airport – Bergamo. You may consider other airports in the area, such as Milan/Linate, Brescia and Milan/Malpensa. To reach Chiuduno you will need to reach Bergamo and from there catch a train with destination Brescia. The Chiuduno railway station is just about 500 metres from the festival area.

JUNE:

Leg02 Guardiagrele (Ch) Parco Nazionale della Majella Abruzzo 10 – 23/06 CULT 10 Vol (18+)

Location: Guardiagrele is a town in the province of Chieti, part of the Abruzzo region of central Italy.

Project: The project is dedicate to restore urban areas and green areas in the town of Guardiagrele, the main centre of the Majella National Park.

Work: The volunteers will use manual tools like rakes, blades, picks, hatchets, brushes, saws. We will move every morning from the hostel to the trail, start working, have our pocket lunch, and work again until 5 o’clock.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in the “il grande faggio” hostel.

Language: English will be the official language in the camp.

Terminal: The closer airport is the International Airport of Abruzzo. The closer train station is Pescara Centrale or Chieti.

Leg03 Afragola (Na) Campania 17-30.06 ENVI 15 vol (18+)

Location: Afragola, Napoli, in Campania region.

Project: The Project will take place in Afragola, a city near Naples. There are large green areas that will been recover by volunteers. The volunteers will also take part in sporting and cultural events, organised in cooperation between Legambiente local group and the local community.

Work: The volunteers will work on cleaning and recovering of the large green areas of the city. New marks will be installed in cooperation with local volunteers that work for the environmental safeguard and the development of the area.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in the headquarters of our association.

Language: English will be the official language in the camp.

Leg04 Valle del Lambro – Pusiano (Co) Lombardia 23/06 – 6/07 ENVI 14 Vol (18+)

Location: Pusiano, como district, small town overlooking the lake, Lambro Valley Park

Project: The Lambro Valley looks like a long green tunnel linking Milan to the Pre-Alps. The park also offers rich historical, as ancient villas and churches, in the green Brianza. Lambro Park area is very important as a natural defense against the use of soil, with this workcamp Legambiente want to reiterate the commitment against the use of land.

Work: The volunteers will be engaged in cleaning the beaches of Lake Pusiano and will help the park staff in monitoring and capture of the Louisiana Shrimp and bird ringing activities

Leg05 Pollone (Bi) Piemonte 25/06 – 9/07 ENVI/FEST 12 Vol (18+)

Location: Pollone is a small village in the Elvo Valley, one of the 5 valleys that compose the district of Biella, in Piedmont region.

Project: The Project will take place in Pollone, a small village hosting the Spacial Nature Reserve of Burcina Park. In this landscapes it’s possible to walk in mountain paths, see farms, churches, beautiful villas that adorn the road from Pollone to the next village Sordevolo. A characteristic element is the agriculture with the breeding cow “Pezzata rossa d’Oropa”.

Work: The volunteers will be involved in cleaning and maintenance of the historical path dedicated to Pier Giorgio Frassati (a relevant historical man of the local culture) and helping in the preparation of the traditional festival “Palio dei Rioni”, in cooperation with local volunteers that work for the environmental safeguard and the development of the area.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in the building of the middle school in Pollone in mixed rooms.

Language: English will be the official language in the camp.

Terminal: Milan or Torino International airports; Biella train station.

Leg06 Novara (No) Piemonte 30.06-13.07 ENVI 12 Vol (18+)

Location: Novara is a city on the edge of the Ticino Park, a few kilometers from Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.

Project: The volunteers will workin three major parks of the city, cleaning, restoring, giving them a new identity and raising people’s awareness, in order to use the green areas in a responsible way.

Work: The volunteers will be involved, in cooperation with the local volunteers, in cleaning the parks and collecting waste, pruning the trees, restoring and painting the benches.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in the gym of an elementary school in mixed rooms.

Language: English will be the official language in the camp.

Terminal: Milano Malpensa Airport; Novara trai station.
