You are a medical student now. You study at the Nursing Department of Bukovinian State Medical University. In three years you will become a nurse and go to work in a polyclinic, hospital, kindergarden, school or house for aged people (a nursing home). You must be pround of your future profession – you’ll become a chief assistant of a doctor and will help him in providing the treatment of the sick.

To be a good nurse you must know and be able to do much. The nurse looks after the patients all day round. She must notice any changes in her patients’ condition and inform the doctor about them. The nurse has many duties which vary depending on where she works – at the therapeutic or surgical department of a hospital, or at a polyclinic.

A ward nurse gives patients medicines prescribed by a doctor. Besides, she performs some procedures like giving injections, applying mustard plasters, taking patients’ temperature and measuring their blood pressure, feeling the pulse, changing dressings and making patients comfortable. She must also be able to give a patient an enema to prepare him for radiology (an X-ray examination) or an ultrasound investigation.

With bed patients the duties of a nurse are to help them with activities of daily living – to lake off and put on their pyjamas, to get out and into (onto) the wheelchair and commode chair, to roll a patient over to prevent bedsores, to help a patient to the bathroom, to change patient’s bedlinen, etc.

In her activities a nurse must keep in touch with the senior nurse and act under her supervision. A professional nurse should always follow some good rules, such as:

 being very attentive in giving patients medicines not to confuse them

 keeping personal hygiene

 being very patient and never rude with her ward

 keeping the information about patients confidential

 showing patients empathy and understanding

 consulting the senior nurse and the doctor in difficult cases

The profession of a nurse is very responsible, indispensible and humane.
