This type of question is similar to a choice question because the writer is asked to choose whether or not he/she agrees with the statement or not. In answering this question, be sure to clearly AGREE or clearly DISAGREE. While it is possible to “write down the middle” and cover both sides, it is better (and faster) to simply pick one and go. After selecting a side the essay becomes merely a list question by outlining the reasons why the test taker agrees or disagrees. Remember that you do not have to personally agree with your choice. The goal is to write a clear, logical essay. If one side is easy to write despite it conflicting with your own opinion, go ahead and write it. Some Agree/disagree questions clearly have one side that is easier to answer than the other.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A person's childhood years (from birth to 12) are the most important years of a person's life. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Title: The Childhood Years are the Most Important Time in a Person’s Life
Agree. The early years of life shape who a person becomes as an adult.

This type of question does appear on the TOEFL from time to time. In writing a response, simplicity is best. Focus on the advantages in the first body paragraph, followed by the disadvantages in the next. In the third body paragraph, make a choice about the topic. For example:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city? If you had a choice, would you like to live in a big city? Give reasons and examples to support your answer.
Title: Life in a Big City
Intro: There are pros and cons to calling a big city home.
There are a number of advantages to living in a big city.
In contrast, living in a big city has disadvantages.
Residing in a large metropolitan area is a good idea.

Some synonyms to help avoid duplication:
AdvantagesDisadvantages
Positives Negatives
Pluses Minuses
Benefits Drawbacks
Upside Downside
Shortcomings
Notes: Remember to focus on structure and basic clarity when writing the essay. The purpose of the essay is to see whether or not the test taker possesses the basic skills necessary to write a university level paper in the U.S. Small mistakes are acceptable, but disorganized, freestyle prose with little logic is certain to garner a low score.
